The acts of our lives that distinguish us from High Among Man's Mortal Enemies Strangely enough this is the worst season of the year for automobile ac- cidents. The death rate from this cause in the United States is nearly 25 per 100,000 population during Sept- ember, October, November and De- cember. For the remainder of the year the average is less than 20. The last two weeks in October and the first two in November are the very worst. More folks are killed by automobiles in December than in any other mounth except the other three named above. In Illinois automobiles were directly responsible for more deaths last year than typhoid fever, diphtheria, scarlet fever, whooping cough, measles, small- pox and infantile paralysis combined. These seven diseases killed a total of 1,620 persons while the toll from au- tomobile accidents reached the alarm- ing total of 1,647. Deaths due to automobiles in Illinois have jumped up from 466 in 1918 to 1,647 in 1926, an increase of 253 per cent in eight years. Only ten diseases out of the whole list that prey upon mankind result in more fatalities than mishaps with automobiles. While doctors and sanitarians are busily engaged in driving diseases from the face of the earth mankind in general is just as busy at introducing mechanisms that kill and cripple at a rate which puts to shame most of the epidemic infections. Each year the frightful toll climbs a little higher than the year before. The rate of increase in mortality from accidents just about equals the per capita increase in auto- mobile ownership. The heaviest accident toll is among folks under 15 and over 50 years old. Perhaps most of the other age groups are driving cars and thereby escape being run down so frequently.
