Beethoven HOLIDAY CROWD SMALL; SYMPHONY IS SUPERB George Dasch and His Players Give Splendid Performance at New Trier Hall By R.'L. P. The cold weather and the holiday season seemed to have kept most of the audience at home last Monday night, and the Little Symphony or- chestra played to a small group of north shore music lovers at New Trier high school. Nevertheless, there was no slackening, and the orchestra put on a program that was exception- ally well handled. A great deal of enthusiasm was displayed convincing- ly by the audience, and Mr. Dasch was called out again and again to acknowl- edge applause. The orchestra gave a splendid in- terpretation of Bach's "Air from Suite in D Major," and followed this with the Bach "Bouree," done with spirit. As for the Beethoven "Overture from Coriolan," many who heard it declared it matched that of the Chicago Sym- phony orchestra. Nothing seemed to have been lost because of the smaller orchestra. Other numbers played were an arrangement of Bizet's "Allegretto vivace from the Roma Suite," by Mr. Dasch; Delibes' "Slavonic Folk Song with Variations," from the Ballet, Cop- pelia; the Scherzo from the Sonata, "Damnation of Faust," by Berlioz; "Tragica," by MacDowell-Schmidt; and a "Marche Hongroise." Two en- cores were given, a Minuet from the "I'Arlessiene" suite by Bizet, and Mozkowski's lovely "Serenade." All had a good orchestral tone and were artistically played. Soloist Pleases Miss Doris Doe, the contralto who has been making herself known in Chicago and on the north shore, pleased with her rendition of the aria, "QO Don Fatale," from the opera, "Don Carlos," by Verdi, in which she was most sympathetically accompanied by the orchestra. Her voice is deep and round, and she sings with the utmost ease. Her diction is especially clear. She chose a wide range of songs, and in all her voice was showed off to good advantage. Her other songs were Wolf's "Zur Ruh! Zur Ruh!" "Chanson Norwegienne," by Four- drain; "Cradle Song," by McFadyen; and "Take Joy Home," by Bassett. Robert MacDonald accompanied her on the school piano, another piano having failed to arrive in time. How- ever, Mr. McDonald's capable fingers made up for any deficiency in the piano. Miss Doe gave two interesting encores, both of which were manu- scripts. One was a song by LaForge, and the other was by John Charles Thomas, a baritone who was accorded much praise last year in America, and who is winning laurels in Europe. From an Indian Lodge ..
