When he catches sight of a man in her room he is prevented from carry- ing. out his purpose by guests in his. house. Later, alone with her when she declares she is innocent, he finds he cannot do it so he sends her away instead. After ten months in jail he is tried and acquitted of her murder. Can a man become a popular hero through such a proceeding? The an- swer is "Yes," as the situation is worked out in "The Mask and the Face," presented Monday evening, January 2, at the Goodman Memorial theater, Chicago. This satirical comedy has been translated from the Italian of Luigi Chiarelli by C. B. Fernald. Admired by the men and women of his country and the idol of his townspeople, the count finds his problem hopelessly complicated by the return of his wife on the day before her funeral. Afraid to have her go or stay because of the danger of discovery, he manages to keep her hidden until next day, when she voluntarily appears to help him explain his conflicting statements. --Robert O.
