10 WINNETKA I TALEK January 28, 1928 A State Bank Building on Service : THE intangible thing called "the spirit of an organization" often finds its best vehicle of expression in the inarticulate ma- terials which constitute its home--in stone, bronze, brass, marble and mosaic. Our banking home gives evidence of the spirit of The Winnetka Trust © Savings Bank. It bespeaks strength and permanence. The cheerful atmosphere of the interior, the convenient arrangement of the various depart- ments, the accessibility of the Officers' desks, all are indicative of our sincere desire to render a courteous, thoughtful financial service. To the larger needs of the community, to the people who live and work here, we pledge our continued efforts to grow and serve. Otis, designed the build- ing and now its improvments; the Win- netka Garden club has taken charge of landscaping the grounds; the wvil- lage as a whole voted $75,000 to be used in its cause, and now, it is hoped that most of the 10,000 residents will make use of the new building and its splendid equipment. The only request made in this story concerning the library is made by the librarians. During the past three months the library has been closed to borrowers, but during that time the staff has been fortunate in having the use of a room in the Village hall, gen- erously offered by the Village coun- cil. During that time they have got- tén ready many hundred volumes of new books. The purchase of these books was made possible by the bond issue. Before the library was closed however, 6,500 books were issued, to be kept until called for, and the re- quest is that these books be returned during the week beginning Monday; January 30. No books will be issued until Monday, February 6, when the library will resume its customary routine of hours and service. All books returned after February 4 will be sub- ject to the usual fines. Winn. 44 200 APPLICANTS FOR NEW TRIER PLAY CAST Freshmen and Sophomores Turn Out in Force to Try for Two February Productions By M. B. With two hundred freshmen and sophomores present at the try-outs, anxious to win parts in the annual play presented at New Trier High school by these two lower classes. the task of selecting only eleven students from such a large amount of promising material seemed a huge one to the faculty coaches. It was finally decided that two plays would be pre- sented, one to have two casts, on the evenings of February 10 and 11. "Wappin' Warf," a comedy by Charles S. Brooks will have the two casts: On one evening this will be given by one group, on the next eve- ning by a second cast. The back- ground of the story is a small town on the cliffs above Devonshire. The characters are the former mates and associates of Flint and Silver, of "Treasure Island" fame, who have turned "wrecker." To turn "wrecker" is to abandon legitimate piracy and to make it one's business to destroy lighthouses and beacons in order that the ships of innocent victims may be more easily plundered. A prince in disguise and his discovery of his child- hood sweetheart, also in disguise as a scullery maid in the pirate crew, add a distinct touch of romance to the story. One of the casts for this play is under the direction of Miss Eliza- beth Stanwood, the other under that of Gordon Van Kirk. An old ladies' home is a far from pirates and princes, but the setting of the second play, "Acid Drops," by Gertrude Jennings. The characters are several old ladies whose chief joy in life is the weekly visit of a young woman who brings with her a touch of the outside world. The members of the cast for this piece are being directed by Miss Clarissa Bell, who has had experience in this type of work in England. reach it 18 Mrs. Julian Clay Risk, who has been ill for the past few weeks, is able to be up again.
