January 28, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 19 Elm Tree Takes Crack at Passing Motorist Robert Mailfald, of 622 Glenview avenue, Highland Park, was the fea- ture actor in an automobile accident while driving on Sheridan road, through Winnetka, Thursday evening of last week, which, according to the report of Sergeant J. G. Boyd, was in no wise due to carelessness either on the part of Mailfald, nor anyone else, except it might be blamed on the "Weather Man." The accident occurred just before 8 o'clock, during the time of the high wind. Mailfald was clipping along at about "thirty" when, without warn- ing, one of the statély old elms which line either side of the drive in the vicinity of Elm street, was toppled over across the road, and Mailfald's car, the next instant crashed into the tree. Even thouzh the impact did dam- age the bumper, snubbers and front axle, at that it was far better than if the top of the car had suffered, Mailfald mused. Mrs. Edgar Crilly, 375 Sheridan road, entertained Tuesday at luncheon and bridge for a few of her friends. Wally's Golf Hints Editor's Note: Following is the eleventh of a series of golf lessons written by Wally Chamberlain, professional at Glen- coe Golf Course, and head of the North Shore Golf School, Winnetka, in which, from week to week, will be presented many helpful hints for those who are just taking up the game of golf, as well as those who have been playing for some time but admit the need for im- proving their game. ; One sure way to save strokes in a round, for the average golfer, is to use a comparatively straight faced club, instead of a lofted one. Many people, when a few feet off the green, take a mashie-niblic and try to pitch right up to the flag. This is a very hard shot, and takes much practice to perfect. It is much easier and safer to run it up with a mid-iron or mashie-iron or ony club upon which you can depend for a roll. Very few good players pitch up when they can run up, so why should the average player who has not had the opportunity to practice the shot as much.
