February 11, 1928 WINNETKA 'TALK 1927 SHOWS CONTINUED TUBERCULOSIS DECLINE At Present Rate of Reduction Illinois Would Eradicate Disease in 27 Years Falling sharply in 1927, mortality from tuberculosis in Illinois rounded out a full decade of unbroken annual declines and gave to the state its lowest recorded fatality rate from that widely prevalent and highly fatal dis- order, according to statistics made public this week by Dr. Isaac D. Rawlings, state health director. With 5387 deaths charged against the di- sease in 1927, a drop of 108 below the figure for 1926, the mortality rate per 100,000 population stood at 73.6 and 76.3 for the two years respectively, a slump of 37% per cent. The reduction during the ten years amounted to ove: 45 per cent. "All of the decline took place down- state," said Dr. Rawlings. "In Chicago the number of deaths from tuberculo- sis in 1927 was 2552 and that for 1926 was 2530, an unfavorable difference of 22. The mortality rate, however, based upon an estimated population of 3,102,800, dropped a trifle in the big city, slipping from 83.0 to 82.2. "Down-state the number of deaths decreased from 2965 to 2835, a favor- able difference of 130. This caused the mortality rate to fall from 71.3 to 67.5 for the entire state outside Chi- cago, a new emphasis that the more sparse the population the more favor- able the opportunity for eradicating tuberculosis. "The continuous downward trend of the mortality rate from tuberculosis is one of the most encouraging features in the whole field of public health serv- ice. In the first place it is a disease that robs humanity of individuals in their very best years of life. The bulk of the mortality occurs in people be- tween 15 and 40 years of age. "In the second place, the eradication of tuberculosis depends very largely upon intelligent action by individuals and families, Measures like water purification, milk pasteurization, sew- age disposal, mosquito abatement, etc., that can be managed by a few people on a community scale and that are so effective against typhoid fever, yellow fever, malaria, cholera and the like are not applicable to tuberculosis. Consequently the continuous advance- ment against tuberculosis indicates a growing popular appreciation of pre- ventive medicine that augers well for even greater improvement and prog- ress against all communicable ailments. "If the 1927 rate of decline were to prevail steadily in the future, Illinois would be completely free from tuber- culosis in 27 years." Children's School Pupils Visit Winnetka Talk Plant The children of the second, third and fourth grades of the Children's school, National Kindergarten and Elementary college, who are editing their' own Children's newspaper and a monthly magazine, paid a visit Fri- day, February 3 to the printing plant of Lloyd Hollister Inc, to see how a "grown-up" paper is made. The various processes which go in- to the making of a newspaper, from the gathering, editing and proof-reading of material through the fascinating me- chanical steps to the production of the finished sheet, were of deep interest to them. The hum of the great presses was sweet music and when the lino- type machine produced metal strips with the names of the individual chil- dren set in type the excursion became a never-to-be-forgotten occasion.
