x 13 February 25, 1928 WINNETKA TALK HEAR JOSEF LHEVINNE Hundreds Brave Blizzard for Master Pianist's Recital at Haven School TI TRI If they had heard him play merely the old Strauss "Blue Danube" it would have been worth the while of the hundreds who braved the blizzard Friday evening to hear Josef Lhevinne, Russian pianist, at the Haven school auditorium, Evanston. For thirty years Lhevinne has been playing the "Blue Danube" with a brilliance that transcends its perform- ance by all other living pianists. That is the consensus of those whose opin- ions are valued, and he quite worthily sustained his supremacy when he play- ed in Evanston. And after he had played it--at the end and in encore of a long program of wonderful music-- he graciously played the Hungarian rhapsodie, and "Liebestraume," and bowed in quiet acceptance of the pro- longed applause of an audience reluct- ant to dismiss him. He gave the first part of his pro- gram to an opening sonata by Bee- thoven and a number of Chopin se- lections. The latter half was made up of Tausig's gypsy airs and the various encores, with which he was indeed generous. Lhevinne is Lhevinne, and that is quite enough to offer in his praise. Members of the North End Mothers' club, who sponsored his per- formance, contributed an evening of rare musical enjoyment in a city that has a superabundance of masterly music. A significant and refreshing item of the evening was the attendance and close attentiveness of many children and young people who apparently appreciated and relished the perform- er's skill--a tribute to Evanston's care for the cultural side of the life of girls and boys.
