Johnny's Golf Hints | Editor's Note: Following is the thir- teenth of a series of golf lessons written by Johnny Takach, head of the North Shore Golf School, Winnetka, in which, from week to week, will be presented many helpful hints for those who are just taking up the game of golf, as well as those who have been playing for some time but admit the need for improving their game. There is nothing more thrilling in a round of golf than a perfectly exe- cuted iron shot. A sharp click is heard and a long ball drops on the green and sticks. I venture to say that very few of the average golfers hear the firm click while playing the mid-iron When taking the stance, the ball should be on a line directly opposite the center of both feet. Press your hands slightly ahead of the ball, with- out closing the blade. The pivot is not as great as on a wooden shot, as the iron swing is more abbreviated. It is also a good policy to keep part of your weight on the ball of your left foot, at the top of your swing, for this will enable you to transfer your weight to the left foot much easier when the hit is made. On taking the back stroke, do not allow your hands to go higher than your shoulders. When you have reached this position your left arm should become taut, thus preventing overswinging, which is the most com- mon error in iron play. When the actual down stroke or hit is started, do not let your body turn ahead of the club, for this will usually cause a slice, but start your hands down first. The hit should be made with a downward rhythm, directly through the ball, so that the divot is taken after the ball is hit. Be sure that your weight is on your Contest to Determine Best New Trier Orator The more advanced public speaking classes at New Trier High school, under the direction of Miss Mabel Payton, are studying oratory this se- mester, and to that end they will hold an oratorical contest next week. Each member of the class is required to memorize an oration, from ten to twelve minutes long, which will be de- livered in the contest. Anyone in the school outside of the classes may also enter, and the contest will determine the school's best orator. HOLD COMMITTEE INSTITUTE An institute for Troop committee- men was held on Thursday evening, March 1, at the Highland Park Pres- byterian church. These get-togethers give the Troop committee an oppor- tunity to exchange experiences and discuss their jobs with men from other troops. FRENCH CLUB MEETS The French club of New Trier High school held a social meeting at the home of Hazel Murphy last Wednes- day. The French club is very busy just now making preparations for the Mardi Gras dance given annually at this season by the club.
