Charles R. Ewing of Chicago secured this contract, which was a most important one, and the results of his work are entirely satisfactory. To one unfamiliar with the plumbing of a big building the amount of work required to complete such a job prob- ably will prove surprising. The equip- ment for the three big washrooms is a big item in itself and one of the feat- ures is a shower bath for the employes of the mechanical departments. There also will be found a number of drink- ing fountains in various sections of the building. For all this work double strong leads were used. But there is another feature and a most important one which the visitor to the plant will not see. That is the auto- matic sump pump. This pump operated by electricity is installed in the boiler room and is a protection against water seeping through the foundation. So powerful is it that it has a capacity forcing 65 to 75 gallons of water per minute through the tile drains and leads to the catch basin. But that is not all. Roof drainage has been well taken care of. Mr. Ewing has attached fourteen cast iron down spouts to a Josam double roof drain. These down spouts are 11.4 inches in diameter, more than big enough to carry off any rain that may fall. Albert M. Levy Is Chicago Representative of Papers Up-to--the-minute methods of I.
