March 3, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 93 Two Stairways Fit Into the Artistic Design of Building JLriNG neatly into the artistic design of the building are two stairs by means of which the employes of Lloyd Hollister Inc., and visitors may ascend from the first to second floor and vice-versa. The stairs were manu- factured by the United Iron and Wire Works of Chicago and represent all that could be asked in the matter oi serviceability. The two stairs in this building are of a construction which provides a light, strong non-combustable stair- way. This type is best for a building where fire resistant construction is required. The solidness of the stairs is indi- cated by these specifications: a heavy plate stringer pressed into form; plat- form plates of heavy blue annealed steel with necessary channel and tee iron support; treads and risers of heavy blue annealed steel with pressed steel nosing and provision for a cement filled tread; railings of steel bars screwed to channels top and bottom and securely fastened to stringers and newel posts: rivets machine driven. All Tile Surfaces of Building Given Heavy Tar Coating F the construction of the new Lloyd Hollister Inc, plant the tarring of all tile wall surfaces, the lathing and the plastering were important. Charles E. Welter of 115 Fifteenth street, Wilmette, handled this job in a satisfactory manner. In order to prevent any possibility of these tile walls sweating or of moisture seeping through, the entire tile surface was coated with R. I. W. water-proof tar, Over this was then placed an expanded metal lathing and the regular plaster surface. The partitions of the building were constructed of a plaster composition hollow tile, Prv-a-bar, manufactured by the United States Gypsum Co., and the plaster was spread directly over the surface in this instance. The walls of the shop sections were coated with white sand plaster. The materials used in the new build- ing were: --9 tons of U. S. Gypsum ground coat, 32 yards of plaster, num- ber 1 torpedo sand, 5 tons of lime, survey of the areas to be heated scan the pages of our north News-Magazines to see how ating the size of the job on Fister building we call attention sie fact that the Variety company .s installed one of its doors at the boiler room entrance, four at the elevator entrances, two at the east en- trance of the building, and one at the Steel Lintels Used in Door and Window Openings of Plant E construction of a building of 4 the fine type of Lloyd Hollister Inc, calls for the use of much steel. This steel must be of various kinds. For instance structural steel lintels of standard fabrications were needed for the window and door openings. Also they state that a fine arrangement of lighting has been affected which makes the building as well lighted as could be desired.
