March 17, 1928 WINNETKA TALK N TENSE SITUATIONS IN "THE YOUNGEST" New Trier Dramatic Club to Present Barry Production in Auditorium Saturday By M. B. To be turned out of your room where vour most treasured books and manu- scricts are kept, and to give that room over to a friend of your sister's whom vou've never seen, is something of an imposition. To have your allowance cut in half simply because your family refuses to put up with your individual, if somewhat peculiar, actions, is worse. And finally, to be asked to leave the house entirely to make room for a second guest It has seldom been a custom of the Winslows to ask Richard how he feels in regard to anything concerning fami- ly affairs. As "the youngest," it is his part to say nothing and act on the advice of his elders and betters, who have little sympathy for anyone in- terested in writing for a living rather than in holding a position in the an- cestral pin factory. Element of Vengeance But in Philip Barry's play, the old, old element of vengeance is not for- gotten, nor is that rather important character, the heroine, who has to do with its weakening. An only child, Nancy, walks into the bosom of a quarreling, selfish family, equipped with what she considers an extensive knowledge of people, and the two formulas, "Treat a mouse like a lion and he'll grow a mane over night," and "A man's greatest victory is over his " own family," To the family she con- fides the first with the assurance that a great deal could be accomplished if Richard were treated with more re- spect. Toward Richard himself, she adopts the attitude that "in order to be great, one simply has to be re- morseless." The Inevitable Clash Where there are a number of people with strong wills and firm opinions, there is almost sure to be a clash. With only two exceptions, the Wins- lows are of that type. So Nancy is drawn into a tense situation; how she works out of it, and what the result of her visit is, will be shown Saturday night, March 17, when members of the New Trier Dramatic club present "The Youngest." Nancy Blake is played by Helen Nygaard, and Richard Winslow by Bill Gibson. The piece is under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Stanwood, faculty coach. CIRCLE REHEARSES PLAY The Girls' Friendship circle practised Tuesday night at Community House on "Lunch in the Suburbs," a new play they will give in April. Those not in the cast played in the gymnasium. The evening ended with a social hour. The net rehearsal will be net Tuesday evening at Community House.
