March 24, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 25 OPEN NATION-WIDE WAR AGAINST TUBERCULOSIS Launch Great Public Health Movement to Conquer Dis- ease; Urge Diagnosis Mrs. Theodore B. Sachs, superinten- dent of the Chicago Tuberculosis In- stitute, announces the Early Diagnosis campaign, to be conducted in Chicago and Cook county under the auspices of the Institute, which is the Christ- mas seal organization for Cook coun- ty. Mrs. Sachs urgently requests the co-operation of the public, among whom the little seals have made so many friends. A list of free materials will be furnished to any one asking it. Ex-patients and others who have had experience with tuberculosis are espe- cially requested to let others have the benefit of that experience; their first- hand knowledge may be very helpful. Many individuals and groups have of- fered their services and, judging by the enthusiasm already aroused, the cam- paign promises to be a great success. The campaign is described as follows : An undertaking probably destined to become a landmark in the field of pub- --_ st J TF fin tic ned of pub- | lic health is the Early Diagnosis cam- paign which is being conducted on a nation-wide basis beginning March, 1928, by the National Tuberculosis as- sociation in its fight against the insi- dious encroachment of tuberculosis. "Let your doctor decide" is the ur- gent message that will greet the eye from bill boards, street car cards, and posters, from Portland to Portland. The preliminary symptoms listed to round out the message are Too Easily Tired, Loss of Weight, Indigestion, and Cough That Hangs On. By them- selves, these symptoms may or may not mean anything, but a combination of any of them strongly indicates tu- berculosis and offers incontrovertible evidence that the advice of a doctor should be sought immediately. During the twenty years the Na- tional Tuberculosis association has been in existence, the death rate from tuberculosis has been cut fifty per cent. Even today, however, the value of ear- ly symptoms is not fully appreciated. For two decades the association has been broadcasting the fact that the earlier the disease is discovered the better the chance for recovery, but doctors still report that the majority of cases that come to them for their first examination are in an advanced stage of the disease. So, believing this to be the strategic time to press such a campaign, the as- sociation is undertaking it with two primary objects in view; first, to focus attention of the public upon the dan- ger signs of early tuberculosis and urge them to go to their doctors for an examination; and second, to stim- ulate renewed interest on the part of the medical profession in the recogni- tion of early signs of tuberculosis. The accomplishment of the second objective will be materially aided, since the American Medical association has agreed to help stimulate the interest of the medical profession through its "Journal," It has also agreed to inter- est the lay public by publishing arti- cles and editorials on the subject in "Hygeia." The American Public Health Association at its annual meeting held in Cincinnati, October, 1927, endorsed by resolution the plan of the campaign and offered to lend assistance to the movement.
