March 24, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 61 At the North Shore Theaters Karl Way Is Given Opportunity to Act in 'The Other Wife' Because it gives Karl Way a chance to do some real acting in addition to his customary excellent directing, "The Other Wife," the current bill at the New Evanston, should be appreciated by North Shore drama fans. The plot is almost wholly fortuitous and the only character of outstanding * importance is the attorney, Robert Bev- ington, who is depicted by Way. Bev- ington got mixed up in his youth with an adventuress and married her. She deserted him and he left the scenes he had known to start a new life, think- ing that she was dead. He married and lived happily ever after--until, on his eighteenth wed- ding anniversary, she turns up to de- mand her part of the riches he has acquired. She is killed--Bevington be- lieves by the shot he fires--and her son--by him, Bevington believes--ap- pears as the sweetheart of the attor- ney's daughter. A poor wretch of the underworld is eta ttteetaoi etaio etaoi etao e taoeotab suspeced of the murder and the police weave a web around him that is almost sure to send him to the chair. Beving- ton, almost a wreck from the mental strain he has been under, determines to fight for the wretch's life. The matter is satisfactorily cleared up before the final curtain as it could not have been cleared up in real life--life just "ain't that way." Margaret Fuller, cast in a part much too old for her, does some very good acting, despite the handicap, as the attorney's wife. Rita Zane, the daugh- ter, is much better than she has ever been. Robert Lowes, who has replaced Charles George as the company's lead- ing man (for which thanks are hereby offered), does a fine job in the part of Richard Bender, the son of the murdered adventuress. George Pembroke, the stage man- ager, who always does good work in any part he takes, does justice to the part of the suspect. The minor char- acters are played by Robert Ward, who is worthy of leading parts and should have them; Ann Dere, one of the most talented members of the company Bert Stork, a newcomer who is a worthy addition to the players; Lew Welsh, the inimitable character man: Beatrice Leiblee, whose work is erratic but sometimes rather good, as in the present play; Robert White, who plays well the parts he is suited to at all, and Marie Fischer, another newcomer. Vik. GLENCOE MOVIES "The Iron Horse," a chronical of the development of the railroad, will be the offering at the Glencoe Union church next Friday afternoon. It is an interesting film, well photographed, has an interesting plot, and will cer- tainly offer good entertainment. It 1s a gay bit of humor, with Bebe her audacious self. In the role of the heiress of the institution, she innocent- ly comes to much grief and trouble, but forgets her imaginary ills in all the ensuing excitement. Richard Arlen, as a reporter, plays opposite Miss Daniels, while William Powell enacts the role of the humor- ous villain. Their work is clever, and Powell departs from his usual serious characterizations to such an extent as to totally convince his audiences as to his comedy talent. Machine, guns revenuers, battles and the antics of would-be invalids all figure in this gay farce. SALABAN & KATZ RSHOR HOWARD AVE."
