Stoffer, the represen- tative in India of the First Congrega- tional church of Wilmette, has just been appointed president of the Ameri- can college in Madura, India, accord- ing to a cable received this week at the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. This is a signal honor in that Mr. Stoffer is a young American who has been serving in India only since 1923, not having yet completed his first term (seven years) as a foreign missionary. He was born in Georgetown, Ohio, and educated at Ashland and Oberlin colleges. Just prior to sailing for India in 1923 he received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. The college, to the presidency of which Mr. Stoffer has just been ap- pointed, was founded by the American board in 1842 and is one of the earliest mission schools of supervised second- ary education in Madura, South India. There are five American and twenty- three Indian teachers on the faculty with an attendant physician, and last year showed an enrollment of #53 students. The college has magnificent buildings standing on 40 acres of ground, a valuable library, laboratories and athletic fields. As a center to its religious life a fine new chapel has just been constructed. Hindus, Mo- hammedans and Christians are among the students and the effect which this American college with its spirit of Contract for Hotel Rooms for Annual Legion Session The American Legion, in handling housing arrangements for 100,000 World war veterans and members of their families going to San Antonio for the organization's national conven- tion October 8 to 12, is carrying out a very comprehensive program which, it is believed, has never before been attempted for a national convention. In several major respects, the plan being followed by the Legion differs from the housing program of the Re- publicans for their national convention at Kansas City and from that of the Democrats for their gathering at Houston, a survey just completed re- veals. The Legion, through its convention bureau, is entering into a definite legal contract for every room in all the ho- tels in the convention city, according to Philip B. Stapp, general convention director. Assignments are being made by the bureau on receipt of an agreed deposit, equal to the first day's charge. democracy and Christian friendship has upon the troubled life of India today can never be fully measured. If one should chance to make a visit to this college on Hostel Day, one would be invited to dine with more than 300 students in true Indian style, sitting upon the floor and eating with one's fingers from a plantain leaf. In this group would be Indians, Europeans, Hindus, Mohammedans, Christians, Brahmins and Pauchamas.
