"Burning Daylight," a First National opus featuring Milton Sills and Doris Kenyon, will be the Friday and Sat- "Silent" Drama No Longer Silent, Signing Up Voices Having, at least partially, settled the problem of how much the stars are worth and divers other questions of equal import, the motion picture pro- ducers are now faced with a new prob- lem--that of signing up actors with good speaking voices for roles in the no longer silent drama. Almost every producing company either is making or is considering mak- ing films with a synchronized audible accompaniment. First National has a filmtone, so have Fox, F. B. O.,, War- ner Bros, and Famous Players and it is probable that Metro-Goldwyn-May- er will be making announcements be- fore long. B. P. Schulberg, the little magis- trate of affairs for Famous Players, has started the big stampede and has signed up John Cromwell for a series of important parts. It is Mr. Schul- berg's intention, it is said, to feature Cromwell in Paramount-Tone produc- tions. Robert Milton has also been signed up by Paramount and it is pretty certain that these contracts are but the first of a long series of such announcements. It would seem, then, that in addi- tion to the qualities formerly required by casting directors the actor will have to have a good speaking voice to get a contract. Mebbe the boys and girls with Hollywood tendencies won't be shouting by the lake shore now! The voice is capable of being cultivated and perhaps that wouldn't be a bad urday offering. idea.
