Catholic Women to Open Columbian Club Mrs. William Schildgen of Evanston is president of the North Shore Catho- lic Woman's league which will hold its annual luncheon at the new Columbian club, Wheeling, Tuesday, June 5, at 12:30. This Catholic country club will have its formal opening Memorial day, and the league's luncheon will be the first affair to be held there. Following the luncheon there will be cards. U. Mock Convention Ruth Hanna McCormick, candidate for congressman-at-large, Senator Charles S. Deneen, Louis L. Emmer- son, Republican nominee for governor, Attorney General Oscar Carlstrom, Otis F. Glenn, Republican nominee for United States senator, Congressman Henry R. Rathbone, and Roy O. West, secretary of the Republican National committee, have been invited to sit on the platform at the mock Republican national convention at Patten gymna- sium, Northwestern university, the af- ternoon and night of Tuesday, May 29. The campus at Northwestern is buzzing with politics in anticipation of the big convention. The campaign for delegates for the various candidates for the presidency is actively under way. Preparation is being made for a struggle over the platform. And those students pacing in deep thought along the shores of Lake Michigan on the Northwestern campus are more than likely preparing the nominating speech for some. favorite son. Four co-eds, Katherine Hicks, head of the Arkansas delegation, Adrienne Grant, Margaret Carter and Betty Mz- Cullough, are preparing to lead the fight against putting a prohibition plank in the national platform, They are also leading the campaign for Nicholas Murray Butler, an avowed "wet," as the logical opponent for Al Smith. As near an exact duplicate of the Kansas City convention as possible is promised by Dr. A. R. Hatton, profes- sor of political science at Northwest- ern, who is assisting the students in the preparation of the mock conven- tion. The floor of Patten gymnasium will be arranged for the various state delegations as is done in an actual convention. Stampedes for favorite sons will be staged with the realism of a real convention. Students will par- ticipate to the full number of delegates that will sit in Kansas City. The opening session of the conven- tion, at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, will have as highlights the keynote speech of Robert Howlett and other preliminary addresses. The night ses- sion will begin at 8 o'clock, when nominating speeches will be made and the vote taken. Unvaccinated Dogs Are Now Barred from Canada Owing to the present scourge of rabies in various sections of the coun- try, heavy penalties are prescribed by the Canadian law against bringing un- vaccinated dogs or other animals into the country, regardless of their healthy condition, according to a bulletin is- sued by the touring bureau of the Chi- cago Motor club. Because of their ig- norance of this ruling, scores of inter- state motorists have recently been turned back to their homes, and in some cases forced to pay a fine for carrying unvaccinated dogs in their cars. The bulletin goes on to say that Ohio laws also forbid bringing into the state a dog which has not been vac- cinated since the expiration of the ef- fective term of this treatment. PARTY FOR ACTRESS Vivian Purcell, who is appearing in "A Companionate Marriage" at the Cort, Chicago, was paid compliment by the party at which Miss Grace Divine of Evanston and Mrs. Marel Clyle of Chicago entertained Saturday evening at the hotel Stevens. Mrs. Clyle recently returned from a Medi- terranean cruise and is making her home temporarily in Chicago.
