May 26, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 53. Bar Association Favors Election of Judge Steffen Considerable interest is evident on the north shore in the candidacy for re-election of Judge Walter P. Steffen of the Cook county Superior court who is one of the sitting judges endorsed by the Chicago Bar association. Judge Steffen is completing his first term as judge of the Superior court with a record that has met with universal approval. Judge Steffen has been in public life for many years, his record of service including his activity as assistant fed- eral attorney under Judge Wilkerson, and two terms as alderman of the old 23rd ward (now the 46th) on the north side of Chicago where he has lived all his life. He perhaps is best known, outside his judicial position, as the famous coach of the Carnegie Tech football team which two years ago had the dis- tinction of breaking Notre Dame's re- markable string of victories. His bril- liant athletic career began at the old North Division High school (now Wal- ler High school) where he gained re- Later his fame spread throughout the country nown as a football player. when he played with Walter Ecker- sall on that great University of Chi- cago team of two' decades ago and eventually filled Eckie"s shoes when that notable star was lost to the squad by graduation. There are many old time critics who regarded "Wallie" Steffen as superior to FEckersall in the matter of directing team play. He is now rated as among the outstand- ing football coaches of the country and will be a member of the faculty of the School for Coaches to be con- ducted at Northwestern university this summer. Judge Steffen is one of the three sitting judges endorsed by the Chi- cago Bar association. In a Bar asso- ciation primary on sitting judges held last November, he was the only can- didate who received a majority vote of the entire resident membership. This primary was regarded as a severe test. Kildeer Country Club in Season's Opener May 19 The official opening of the Kildeer Country club's season was observed last Saturday when the break in the rainy weather enabled the members of the club to dig out the old golfing tools and take a few shots. On Sun- day when the bright sunshine appeared the course was populated. Kildeer, which is situated on the McHenry road near Wheeling, has a 36-hole course over rolling wooded land.. Tennis and playground sports will be enjoyed at this club this summer, the work on the courts and playgrounds being rushed along for early completion. CIRCLE TO CLOSE SEASON The last meeting of the Walden Road circle will be held at the home of Mrs. Robert Price Monday, May 28, at 2 o'clock. The members will meet for bridge, and at 4 o'clock there will be music for those who do not care to play bridge. Tea will be served. Mrs. Ralph Buteau is the newly elected chairman. Mrs. Sherman Goble, 511 Ash street, entertained the Executive Board of the Drama club at luncheon last Tuesday at the Medinah Country club. --_---- Miss Elsie Thal is leaving this Sun- day for a week's trip to New York.
