June 30, 1923 WINNETKA TALK (2) Complete Work on Great Federal Road Spanning Country The national highway, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, ex- tending 3,205 miles through fourteen states, was recently completed, accord- ing to information received by the touring bureau of the Chicago Motor club, from the Department of Agri- culture. This road is passable for its entire length, from Atlantic City, N. J., to its western end in Oakland, Cali- fornia. The Federal Government has contributed nearly $18,000,000 to the cost of building this road. Where once wagon trains crawled laboriously across the untracked plains in deadly fear of hostile Indians, there is now a broad inviting highway near- ly all paved, and lined with varied in- dustries which have come into being to make the lot of the motor traveler safe and convenient. He can travel in comfort from the Atlantic Ocean to the Golden Gate, and, in the Ohio Valley, drive along the longest stretch of practically straight road in the country. Farther west, this road touches on the great gold fields of Colorado and California, which had so much to do with the early settlement of the west, and it traverses, also, the Mormon settlement in Utah, the great pioneer agricultural experiment spon- sored by Brigham Young. Less than 14 per cent of the length of the national highway is unimprov- ed. Federal Aid projects on this route include 700 miles of pavement, 725 miles of surfaced road, 132 miles of graded road, and more than four miles of bridges. Magnus, president of the Puritan Malt company, has purchased the home of George F. Gonsalves lo- cated at 919 Hill road, Winnetka. This is the heart of the Indian Hill club district. This home is a Bedford stone resi- dence about two years old, contains twelve rooms, two large porches and five baths. There is a four-car gar- age attached. The land comprises about 1 1-3 acres. The sale price is withheld, but the property was offered for $125,000. McGuire & Orr were the only brok- ers in the transaction. W. S. Jensens Leaves on Automobile Tour Dr. W. S. Jensen of 1063 Meadow street, Glencoe, and Mrs. Jensen left Thursday noon on a two week's auto- mobile tour to Detroit, Windsor, Can., Niagara Falls, and New England. At Niagara Falls they will visit Dr. Jen- sen's parents. They expect to return to Glencoe on July 16. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Beardslee left Winnetka yesterday for a ten days' motor trip in northern Michigan and Minnesota. Ruth and Alice, their daughters, are accompanying them as far as their camps in Michigan. On their return Mr. and Mrs. Beardslee will spend six weeks with Mrs. Beard- slee's mother, Mrs. M. F. Pardee of 017 Forest avenue, Evanston. Late in August the family will be reunited at Lake Mills, Wis. --0-- Mr. and Mrs. C. F. M. Miller of 936 Elm street have left for a bus trip to Detroit, Canada, Rochester, N. Y., and Niagara Falls. They will return to their home the last of July.
