¥ July 14, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 37 Panosh in Form; Winnetka Defeats Chicago Magpies The rampaging Winnetka baseball team resumed its winning ways again last Sunday, and lambasted the cack- ling Chicago Magpies for an 8 to 5% win. Because of the flooded condition of the Skokie Playfield diamond the game was played on the Skokie school field, and only a handful of loyal Win- netka rooters turned out to witness the pastime. The Magpies gave the locals a stren- uous battle for six innings, at which time the Winnetka outfit was clinging to a meager 4 to 3 lead. In the last half of the seventh the home clubbers began utilizing their bats for some- thing more than shoulder ornaments, and as a result, Murphy, the Magpie twirler, was sent to the showers. Mur- phy, it might be stated, was somewhat of a good pitcher, and enjoyed a repu- tation of having played for several years in the International league with the Baltimore Orioles. The local out- fit, however, refused to take a back seat for a mere reputation, and began wading into Mr. Murphy's offerings in the seventh after which time they breezed along comfortably out of dan- ger. Panosh Whiffs Twelve George Panosh, the pride of the Winnetka team, enjoved another good day on the mound. He whiffed twelve, walked two, and only allowed eight hits. George is an excellent pitcher, and is easily the best twirler that has ever performed for a local team. On the Fourth of July he let the heavy clouting Wilmétte team down with four well scattered hits, and gave them the small end of a 3 to 2 score. Next Sunday Winnetka will engage the strong North Chicago Booster team. This team earlier in the season trimmed Wilmette 16 to 1. It is hoped that Panosh will again enjoy a suc- cessful day. "Luke" Johnsos, who captained this year's Northwestern university and who has been playing a bang-up game in center field for the Winnetka club this season, will return from Cin- cinnati in time to don a uniform for Sunday's game. Luke, as most of the fans already know, left immediately after the Fourth of July game for Cincinnati where he has been working out with the Cincinnati Reds. In the last report from Mr. Runn- | feldt, grounds keeper of the Skokie Playfield, he stated that the baseball diamond will be in first class condition for tomorrow's game. In the event of rain causing a re-flooding of the dia- mond, the game will be played at the Skokie school field.
