July 21, 1928 WINNETKA TALK EVANSTON HOST MONDAY TO CHEMISTRY INSTITUTE Eminent Scientists Convene Here for Month; Seek Public Interest Eminent chemists from all over the country and several from Europe will attend the Institute of Chemistry of the American Chemical society, which convenes at Northwestern Monday morning for its second annual session. Newest ideas in the science of chem- istry will be presented by the lecturers and speakers, who will number close to 100. Several hundred men, altogether, are expected to be here for part of the institute, which will continue to Aug. 18. Farm relief through science, petroleum research, synthetic rubber, the relation of chemistry to life, the world's food supply and national de- fense will be some of the feature dis- cussions in which college heads, agri- culturists, officers of the army and navy and scientists from university and industrial laboratories as well as from state and federal services will take part. Study Farm Problems Several hours each day during the entire first week will be devoted to the farm problem, the solution of which, the chemists maintain, lies in science and not in politics. Scientists believe, states Dr. Frank C. Whitmore of Northwestern, director of the in- stitute, that the first step is to develop markets for agricultural products aside from food. Discussion of chemistry in agricul- ture will take place daily from 10:20 to 1 o'clock at Harris hall during the conference period. Other topics of the later conferences will be paint and varnish, alloys, organic chemistry, sanitation, health and chemistry, petroleum and national defense. Topics have been chosen to inter- est the public, states Dr. Charles D. Hurd, the executive secretary, and the papers to be read will be for popular understanding. Among the lectures thought to be most interesting to the general public are those each day at 7 and 8 p. m. in Harris and Fisk halls. He will speak Tuesday at 2 p. m. in Harris hall. B. S. Hopkins of the University of Illinois, the discoverer of a new ele- ment; Gerald E. Wendt, dean of the school of chemistry and physics at Pennsylvania State college; A. Kendall, dean of the Northwestern medical school three years ago, and Harry Holmes, head of the depart- ment of chemistry at Oberlin college and author of several chemical works, will also be prominent speakers. 50th Anniversary Is Celebrated by Wilmette Couple A few days ago Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Briggs of 102 Fifth street, smiling joyfully as they packed the grips and trunk, remarked "The first fifty years are the happiest." Then arm in arm they started for the station to board a train for Lakeside, O., to spend the remainder of the summer. The Briggs have been spending their summers in the Ohio town for a num- ber of years, but that isn't the reason for this story. The story concerns the celebration of their fiftieth wedding anniversary which was held at their Wilmette home on July 10. Almost all the relatives of the celebrants were present. The Briggs have resided in Wilmette for nine years. "Doesn't seem like fifty years," Mrs. Briggs told her guests. "Mr. Briggs and myself are enjoying the best of health and we expect to celebrate a lot more anniversaries." Before his retirement a few years ago Mr. Briggs was engaged in the hardware business. Mr. and Mrs. Hughston McBain, (formerly Margaret Keith of Kenil- worth) are being congratulated upon the birth of a son at the Evanston hospital.
