Previous to the rains, Superintendent William Edwards and his force in the Mosquito Abatement district, by oil- ing and other work in which the Dist- rict is engaged, had the situation well in hand, but the rains coming before the work of the Sanitary district was finished, resulted in a flood which was "pie" for the mosquitoes. Superintendent Edwards, in discuss- ing the situation this week, said the North Shore Mosquito Abatement district enlisted the aid of the Sani- tary district in putting a ditch through the Skokie valley, which, when com- pleted, will thoroughly drain the many swamps in that section. The Sanitary district, so far, he said, has done good work, but that work is not completed. The heavy rains resulted in a delay of the dynamiting of the ditch. Neither could the men get into this section to do any oiling. The water in some places was over a man's head. The recent influx of mosquitoes to the north shore came from the Skokie, Superintendent Edwards admits, but it is hoped that the Sanitary district will resume its dynamiting operations very shortly and complete the job which they have started. Approved System Superintendent Edwards pointed out that in any locality the means em- ployed in ridding the section of mos- quitoes is by drainage and getting rid of stagnant water wherever found, as it requires only 7 days to hatch out a mosquito and not 15 days as some have stated. Where it is not possible to drain these places, oil must be used. All experts in mosquito control work, including Major Skinner of the Gorgas Memorial association and who is rec- ognized as one of the foremost authori- ties in this line of work, has laid out the plan of operation for the Chicago Sanitary district and the North Shore Mosquito Abatement work, Superin- tendent Edwards explained. "Major Skinner," he continued, "has been at work in the New Jersey and Long Island districts for several years past, where dynamiting has been used to open up ditches, the same as is being done in the Skokie valley. It is unfortunate this work was not com- pleted in time to avoid the recent flood," he said, "and when the Sani- tary district does resume its dynamit- ing operations it is hoped the people will have patience, realizing the im- portance of the work and why it is being done. "This is a big job. The Skokie is large and it cannot be accomplished in a few weeks." Mrs. Sarah E. Irion, who had been making her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Kentnor, 310 Woodland avenue, for some years, passed away on July 21 at the home of her other daughter, Mrs. Charles S. White of Indianapolis whom she had been visiting. Mrs. Irion was 76 years old.
