i August 18, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 17 SCHIPA WILL APPEAR IN "DON PASQUALE" Famous Light Opera to Be Given First Presentation of Season at Ravinia Tuesday With the ninth week of Ravinia opera and concerts beginning Sunday afternoon, August 19, Louis Eckstein has not only arranged for the presen- tation of two of the most popular operas of the repertoire which have been unheard thus far this season, but he has effected several important cast changes and has endeavored as far as possible to meet the many requests which have reached his desk by giving some repeat performances which have been much in demand. To do this it has been found necessary to make every night of the week an opera night, thus bringing the double bill of "L'Heure Espagnol" and the garden scene of "The Jewels of the Madonna" as an extra performance on Monday night, August 20. "Don Pasquale" one of the most amusing of the light operas which has long been a favorite at Ravinia is to be given its first presentation of the season on Tuesday night, August 21, with Florence Macbeth, Tito Schipa and Vittorio Trevisan in its principal roles. "La Traviata" which, since the day of its original production in 1863, has been considered as one of the most melodious operas of the Italian school, is to be the offering for Saturday night, August 25. This will be its first presen- tation of the season and Tito Schipa will be cast as Alfred Germont with Queena Mario in the title role and Giuseppe Danise as the elder Germont. Boheme" Sunday The repeated operas of the week are "La Boheme" which will be given on Sunday night, August 19, with Mme. Elisabeth Rethberg as Mimi and Ar- mand Tokatyan as Rodolfo; "I'Heure Espagnol" and the garden scene of "The Jewels of the Madonna" on Mon- day night, August 20. Mme. Yvonne Gall will again be heard as Concepcion in the former work while Miss Flor- ence Easton will appear opposite Mario Chamlee in "The Jewels of the Ma- donna." Giuseppe Danise will this time be cast as Raffaele. "Andrea Chenier" will be repeated on Wednesday night, August 22, with Mme. Rethberg sing- ing the part of Madeleine and Edward Johnson appearing as Chenier. "L'Elisir d'Amore" will again be given on Thursday night, August 23, with Tito Schipa, Florence Macbeth and Vittorio Trevisan in the roles they made so amusing and melodious when this Donizetti work was given for the first time this year. Puccini's "Man- on Lescaut" is scheduled for Friday night, August 24, Miss Florence Easton again appearing in the title role with Edward Johnson as the Chevalier Des Grieux. Attention is again called to the fact that there is a vast difference between this Puccini version of the "Manon" story and the French edi- tion of the same story by Massenet, which likewise forms a part of the Ra- vinia repertoire. Bohemian Concert For the first time since Ravinia in- augurated its national concerts, which have been popular Sunday afternoon features this season, Bohemia will be represented on Sunday afternoon, Au- gust 19, the program on that day con- sisting of the works of Bohemian com- posers and being dedicated to the Bohemian Arts Club of Chicago. Dr. J Vojan, president of that or- ganization will make the address of welcome, The program to be played by the Chicago Symphony orchestra, under the direction of Eric Del.amar- ter, will consist of works by Smetana, Dvorak and Suk. Jacques Gordon, vio- linist, will be the soloist. Still another national concert has been scheduled for Sunday afternoon, August 26, at which time the music of Sweden will be presented. This is the first time that the Swedish people have been represented in the series of Ra- vinia national concerts, and the pro- gram will be dedicated to the Swedish National Society of Chicago. Charles S. Peterson, chairman of the society will speak. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra will present the program under the direction of Eric DeLamar- ter and Mme. Julia Claussen, contralto of the Ravinia Opera forces and Al- fred Wallenstein, 'cellist, will be the soloists. Mme. Claussen is herself a Scandinavian. The opera on the eve- ning of Swedish Day will be "Aida" with Mme. Rethberg, Edward John- son and Mme. Claussen in the three leading 'roles.
