August 18, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 33 Matters of Interest to North Shore Autoists Shatterless Glass Saves 2 Wilmette Men From Injuries There are two men in Wilmette who consider themselves lucky that the new Model A Ford has tri-plex windshield glass. In the shop of the Skokie Motor company on Main street there is a windshield which was taken from a Ford a few days ago after it had been in collision with another and bigger car on the Ridge on the night of Wil- mette Day. The collision was due to a sudden stop by the bigger car, the Ford ram- ming into it with terrific force. At the moment of the impact the two Wil- mette men were thrown head first against the windshield. The glass was cracked in a thousand pieces, but no injury was sustained because the glass did not shatter. There was considerable other dam- age, however, the bumper of the Ford being torn off and the front end being badly jammed and bent. Contract Is Let to Widen Milwaukee to Dempster Contracts for the paving of 25.8 miles of additional wider highways in Cook County have been ordered let by President A. J. Cermak. These roads are part of the massive highway build- ing and highway widening program which is part of the $15,000,000 Bond Issue olan. Already more highways are being built in Cook County than was ever before attempted. Among the highways to be widened is Milwaukee avenue to Dempster street. Road Tips for North Shore Motorists Dundee road is closed for construc- tion from the Dundee feeder road to the Northwest Highway; traffic is detoured via the Algonquin road to the Barrington road, north to the Bridewell road, east to the Ela road, north to the Baldwin road and east to the Northwest Highway, then northwest to the Dundee road. This piece will be opened about August 30. Waukegan road (IlI-42A) is widen- ed and open from Milwaukee avenue, or 111-21 to the Glenview road. How- ever, this road is closed for further widening from the Glenview road to the county line, and will be opened about September 15. Traffic is de- toured west on the Glenview road to Shermer road; north to Walters ave- nue in North Brook; northeast to the intersection of Dundee road and Lee road; north to Lake-Cook road, and west to I1l-42A or Waukegan road at the county line. Between Dundee road and the county line, Waukegan road is open to traffic at night only. Oakton street is closed from Wau- kegan road to Lehigh avenue and will be opened about August 30. Traffic is detoured south on Lehigh avenue to Howard street, west to Waukegan road, and north to Oakton street. Asbury street in Evanston which is really a continuation of Western ave- nue, is now closed from Howard street to Oakton street, while a pavement is being laid, and will be opened about August 15. This is a very important piece of work, as it will make another outlet for traffic on Western avenue in Chicago. At present, traffic is de- toured east on Howard street, north on Ridge avenue and west on Oakton street. Lawrence avenue is closed indefinite- ly between Des Plaines River and Mannheim road because of the con- struction of a viaduct. Traffic can be detoured via the River road to Bryn Mawr avenue to Mannheim road to Grand avenue, The Ballard-Rand bridge near the intersection of Rand and Ballard roads will be completed about September 15, until which time Rand road and North- west Highway traffic will be detourea via Minor street, and the River road in Des Plaines. Dempster street is being widened to 40-feet from McCormick boulevard to Harms road, but is open to traffic dur- ing construction. The piece from Harms road to Milwaukee avenue is widened but the center is not finished. Dempster street is widened to 40 ft. Because of construction its use is not advisable west of McCormick boule- vard. Several hundred motorists, many from the north shore, attended the big picnic of the Motorists Association of Illinois at Ryan's Woods, Eighty- seventh street and South Western ave- nue, Chicago, last Sunday. "SAFETY FIRST" PLEDGE SOUGHT OF MOTORISTS Chain Letter Started to Prevent Accidents Is Intended to Go All Over the World A pledge to practice "Safety First" is sought from motorists all over the world in a chain letter which made its appearance in almost all the villages of the north shore last week. The letter admonishes: "Cross crossings cau- tiously and don't break the chain. "Avoidable accidents take a toll yearly in this country which exceeds or equals the casualties of any war in which we haye engaged" says the letter, which is signed by a motorist who has resolved to practice "safety first." Also there appears this line: "I will do everything in my power to save a life or prevent any accident to my fellow men." The chain, the letter coninues, was started by an American officer and should go around the world three times. After months of conference, the car and tire manufacturers of the country have agreed upon 18 tire sizes as a standard list for 1929 equipment. Tires hereafter will be marked with the cross section followed by the rim diameter on which the tire is to be used and be- neath, in smaller numbers, the former size of the tire. For example, a tire may be marked 6.00-19 and beneath in half size numerals, 31x6.00. aulty Brakes--No Excuse!
