Kenilworth 3980-3981 Playhouse Will Present "The Fearless Cossack" "The Fearless Cossack" or "Taras Bulba," one of the most famous char- acter creations in all of Russia's liter- ature, has been brought to the screen in a photoplay which the Playhouse will present for the week beginning Sunday, August 26. "Taras Bulba," the novel on which "The Fearless Cossack" is based, was written by N. V. Gogol, the great Russian novelist, and instantly became one of the classics of Slavic litera- ture. Gogol pictured with minute ac- curacy the lusty, ribald and often mur- derous marauders, dispatched by Czar Ivan, "The Terrible," to defend his furthermost borders against the incur- sions of the Crimean Tartars. A horseman, a gambler and a war- rior, Taras Bulba neither loved life nor feared death. His allegiance was to his Czar, and for it he slew his treacherous son and was finally burned at the stake himself. Gogol's character of Taras Bulba, the fearless, plodding Russian Cossack, is somewhat analagous to the leaders of MATINEES SATURDAY, SUNDAY our own hardy pioneers who first blazed the trail to the Western wilder- ness and his power, his lack of emo- tion, his zeal, his bravery, and his blindness--all these are part of the canvas upon which Gogol has drawn his powerful portrait. NEWSPAPER PLAY COMING Reports from New York indicate that "The Front Page," newspaper play, will be given in Chicago about Christmas time. The scene of the play is the newspaper men's room in the Criminal Courts building, Chicago, and the theme is said to be the devotion of the real newspaper man to the busi- ness of being a newspaper man. AIR MAIL PICTURE "The Air Legion" is the name of a dramatic story of the air mail to be directed by Bert Glennon, who has had previous successes with "The Perfect Crime" and "Gang War." "The Cossacks" on Varsity Bill for 3 Days Next Week Johnny Hines has discovered that inventors have their troubles just the same as other people, as you will see if you visit the Varsity theater this Saturday, August 25, when the com- edian's new First National picture, "The Wright Idea," produced by C. C. Burr, is the big laugh feature. In his current role Johnny discov- ers that the only people who seem to seek his society are bill collectors and his landlady. Folks seem to forget that an inventor has to eat. So life continues in its monotonous way until Johnny befriends an old gentleman who is getting the worst of a strenu- ous argument; and the same day gets into an argument himself with the "prettiest and sweetest girl in the world." The mysterious old gentle- man presents Johnny with a yacht, so he invites the girl aboard to continue the argument. And what goes there- after the Varsity will show you. Gilbert Has Lead Love, sport, and murder among the cowboys of Russia is the theme of "The Cossacks," to be shown for three days at the Varsity next week, Mon- day, Tuesday, and Wednesday. It is the screen version of Tolstoi's Rus- sian drama, glorifying man's brutality. John Gilbert plays the effeminate son of a bold, blustering Cossack, who courts the beautiful lady of the clan. She scorns his love, and her contempt, with village taunts and the lash of his father, turns Gilbert into a throat- slitting demon who revels in Turkish blood. Renee Adoree plays opposite Gilbert in this picture, and the two make a dashing team. Nils Asther does sparkling work as a prince. "Forgotten Faces," screen version of Richard Washburn Child's "A Whiff of Heliotrope," will be the Varsity at- traction for next Thursday and Fri- day, August 30 and 31. It is the story of a convict's love for his daughter. The emphasis is placed upon the subtle way in which the father checks his wicked wife in her plot to injure their daughter. Clive Brook has an unusual style of role for him in the part of "Heliotrope Harry," the convict. As his nickname suggests, he was noted in the days of his freedom for his use of heliotrope scent. Olga Baclanova, that vivid young Russian who can play lady vil- lains so convincingly, has the role of the wife. Mary Brian is the daughter | whose safety is her father's sole con- cern. The picture is ranked among the best. Bebe Daniels, James Hall in Community House Film Hoot Gibson, who recently appeared at the Chicago rodeo, will be seen in "Wild West Show" at the Community House next Tuesday night, August 28. This picture is based on his many ro- deo experiences, and will be no dis- appointment to Hoot Gibson fans. Dorothy Gulliver is the leading lady. "The Fifty-Fifty Girl," with Bebe Daniels and James Hall is the Com- munity House attraction for next Friday, August 31. The story, which is typically Bebe Daniels, deals with a girl who is firm in the belief that she can make a man look silly under any set of circumstances. James Hall, Bebe's leading man, accepts her pro- posal to take the part of the woman if she will run things like a man. Bebe as the boss and cocky James Hall as the demure girl do make real comedy situations.
