"The primary object of the new league," according to the New Trier News, student publication of New Trier High school, "is to put interscholastic athletics on a sounder basis. Health and sportmanship will displace the de- sire for championships at any price as the main objective to be attained by each school." Organize Last Spring The first meeting of the league was held late last spring when a constitution was drawn up and temporary officers elected. Frederick A. Kahler, dean of boys at New Trier High school, was made temporary president at that time. Mr. Kahler recently has been made per- manent president of the organization, and Mr. Wiebe, of Morton High school, is secretary. Schools which are members of the league may compete with non-member schools if they wish, according to Mr. Kahler, but in general the interscholastic athletic activities of the six schools in the league will be confined to contests among the members. Officials at all athletic events sponsored by the league will be chosen from the faculties of one of the member schools. Purposes of League The main purposes and objectives of the new league are stated in the pre- amble to its constitution, which says in part: "What is the fundamental prin- cipal of interscholastic athletics? How- ever great the interest in, and the de- mand for, such athletics on the grounds of "entertainment, excitement, and pub- licity may be, the only fundamentally valid justification for an extensive ath- letic program is that of health. It is, then, the policy of this suburban league to utilize these "interests and demands to further the promotion of student health through physical activity. To this end, greater participation, wider competition, and an increased number of sports are planned among the schools forming the membership of the league."
