Octoher 27, 1928 WINNETKA TALK ADD LARGE PLAY SPACE T0 HORACE MANN SCHOOL Board of Education Purchases Kate Dwyer Residence for New Playgrounds The Winnetka board of education recently acquired the northwest corner of 'the: Horace Mann school block. This corner, on .which the home of Miss Kate Dwyer is situated, will be- come a part of the Horace Mann play- ground. Plans for grading the newly acquired property are under way and may be briefly described as follows: The part of the Horace Mann play- ground immediately around the Hor- ace Mann school will be put in lawn, with shrubs from the Dwyer property transplanted around the schoolhouse to beautify it. The apparatus 'now in the part of the playground immediately west . of the school building will be moved fur- ther north into the grove of trees with the other apparatus and this west cen- tral section of the playground will be graded to make an attractive play space, rectangular, level, and away from the classroom windows. Excellent Play Space Miss Dwyer's house at present oc- cupies a sort of low plateau. After the removal of the house this plateau will be somewhat leveled down, a few of the best trees around the edges be- ing saved. There will be, therefore, a good sized, level, rectangular play space for the older children on the northwest corner of the school block, running well back into what is now Miss Dwyer's back yard. The westernmost part of Miss Dwyer's back yard will be preserved as a play space for little children, the present apple trees being retained for climbing .purposes. This play space and the play space for larger children on the site of Miss Dwyer's present house will be from three to five feet higher than the main Horace Mann grounds. The two levels will be separ- ated by a rubble wall, except at the extreme south end. At the south end of Miss Dwyer's present property there will be con- structed a long incline from the Hor- Plant Bulbs Now!-- for Spring Blooming Leading Varieties of DARWIN TULIPS $3 - $4 per 100 50,000 choice Bulbs imported by us direct from Holland. This incline will be used as an approach in ordinary weather and as a hill for coasting when there is snow on the ground. Sell Home at Auction The complete Horace Mann play- ground will therefore consist of some play space in the front part of the pesent Horace Mann yard, immediately south of Elm street but not approach- ing the school building itself; an ap- paratus corner in the grove on Elm street where the present Junglegym 1s; two rectangular play spaces for older children, one immediately south of the grove and one where Miss Dwyer's house is; and one playground for little children approached by the long incline and situated at the south end of Miss Dwyer's back yard. The Dywer house itself will be sold at public auction Saturday afternoon, November 3, at 2:30. The house, while old, is said to be in execellent re- pair, substantially built, and well worth moving and using on some other pro- perty. The money realized from the sale of the house is to be used toward the grading of the ground and the establishing of satisfactory play facil- ities at Horace Mann, BC -- Mrs, Isaac Paul of Boston is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Henry K. Urion, of 989 Cherry street, until she goes to her winter home in Florida. -- November 5 is the date set for the Junior Red Cross assembly at Skokie school. 796 Elm Street GLADYS HAWKINS Concert Pianist and Teacher Pupil of Theodore Leschetizky, Vienna Piano Instruction in all its phases 576 Hawthorne Lane Phone Winnetka 2414 New Lamps and Shades are also coming. | Painted Butterfl 1054 GAGE ST.
