| November 3, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 7 PICK DEBATE TEAMS Hold Tryouts for Places on New Trier Teams; School to Compete With Cleveland Debaters Next May Preliminary tryouts for places on New Trier High school's debate teams were held at the school last Friday. The final tryouts will be held in about two weeks, and twenty-five boys are ex- pected to compete, according to Ches- ter E. MacLean, New Trier debate coach. John Erickson, a member of the team which defeated Cleveland in 1927 when that team was champion of Ohio, is the only boy assured of a place on one of this year's New Trier teams. The five other boys who will make up the two teams are to be announced Cops Use "Hunch," Nab Two Culprits With Stolen Auto Patrolmen Ralph Rayburn and Les- ter Barker, of the Winnetka police, employed the old "hunch" one evening early this week in recovering a stolen car and, with it, effecting the capture of two culprits. The car, parked on Sheridan road, proved to be the property of Arthur L. Hardin of 1456 Fargo avenue, Chicago, a real estate operator with offices at 77 West Washington street, and the occupants, Jack Free and Arthur Whiteneck, had a gun in the machine. Free gave his age as 15. Whiteneck, who is much older, claimed to be the boy's uncle. Both gave their address as 1554 Juneway terrace, Chicago. or fancied tales of many harrowing escapades of the pair, who, upon being turned over to the Chicago police, were held to the grand jury with bonds fixed at $5,000 each. Defer Junior Red Cross Assembly Until Thursday The annual Junior Red Cross as- sembly, which was to have been held at the Skokie school Monday, Nov- ember 5, has been postponed until Thursday, November 8 The Mon- day assembly at the school will be given over to speeches by students of Mrs. Claire Bernhard's current events classes on subjects relating to the present political campaign. Dr. and Mrs. E. J: Randall, whose children recently have entered the Horace Mann school, were visitors at Mr. and Mrs. Lewis F. Tuells of 900 Greenwood avenue, Winnetka, motored to Northfield Friday and attended the homecoming at Carlton college.
