LIBRARY PLAZA CAFETERIA IN THE LIBRARY PLAZA HOTEL Orrington Avenue just South of Church Street Open 6 a. m. to 7:45 p. m. including Sundays Storage Batteries Big Item on Antarctic Trip Two and one-half tons of storage batteries are now on the way to the South Pole with the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, according to U. C. Ab], north shore Exide dealer. "All of these," says Mr. Abel, "are Exides. With this equipment, Com- mander Byrd and his party will main- tain radio communication with the world at large; also between the main base and the various sub-bases and exploration parties. 'This is the largest equipment of storage batteries which has ever been taken from the beaten paths of civiliz- ation. But the experience of explorers like Byrd, MacMillan, Amundsen and others has taught them that the mod- ern storage battery adds to the elec- trical equipment 'of the explorer the element of absolute dependability which is so necessary when human lives may hang in the balance. Com- mander Byrd found his Exide batteries valuable pieces of airplane radio equip- ment when he accompanied Donald MacMillan to the Artic in 1925; also when he flew over the North Pole in 1926, and across the Atlantic in 1927. "According to Commander Byrd's plans," says Mr. Abel, "these batteries will comprise part. of the radio equip- ment on the airplanes and dog-sleds and of the various sub-bases." IN SENIOR PLAY Miss Ethel Hale, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry R. Hale, 761 Foxdale avenue, has been chosen a member of the cast of the senior play, "A Kiss for Cinderella" at Elmira college. Elmira, which was the first college for women established in America, displays a great interest in the fostering of dramatic art. Miss Hale is a popular member of the class of 29 and has starred in several previous productions. UNDERGROUND CABLE JOB COMPLETED BY VILLAGE Improvement Important Step in Ridding Village of Unsightly Overhead Wires The electric distribution department of the village has just completed the installation of 11,000 feet of under- ground cable and conduit at the muni- cipal generating plant located at the east end of Tower road at the lake. This cable carries all the electric energy used by residents, as well as street lighting current, and runs un- derground from the plant up the bluff, west on Tower road to Bryant and Prospect avenues. The installation of this cable marks an important step in the ultimate re- moval of unsightly wires and poles from the Village streets, and is partic- ularly important at this location as the means of safeguarding the relia- bility of electric service rendered by the village to the community, as any damage caused by storms or automo- bile collisions to the old overhead lines would have caused a very serious in- terruption in service. The design and installation of this system of conduits and cables was under the direction of Harold J. Bohnen, distribution superintendent of the village, the work being entirely handled by the distribution depart- ment. The total cost was approxi- mately $22,000, which represents a very considerable saving over the cost if handled by an outside electrical con- tractor, it is pointed out. The cables are several times larger than those which were replaced and will take care of the maximum needs of the village for many years to come, officials declared. + Pre- fine DISCOUNT Furs GIVING FUR SALE.
