Widgery of Cambridge University Gives Next Talk in Series The next of the talks giving a mod- ern interpretation of religion in the series arranged by Northwestern uni- versity will be given by Dr. Alban G. Widgery, Stanton lecturer on the philosophy of religion, Cambridge university. He will speak Thursday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 in Wieboldt hall on the McKinlock campus. Dr. Widgery's subject will be "To- wards a Constructive Philosophy of Religion." Last Thursday's forum was ad- dressed by Dr. Edward S. Ames, pro- fessor of theology at the University of Chicago, who asserted religion to- day must be interpreted by ritual and art, for the colorless and abstract re- ligion is unattractive. "This colorful ritualizing of religion," said Dr. Ames, "is more difficult than many realize, but the principle upon which it can be done is clear. The modern religious leader must see the moral and spiritual values in daily life and must discern the social rela- tions of normal human beings. Then he must enhance and beautify these relationships with the weight and re- sources of public recognition and of celebration." "The majority of persons today must take their religion second-handed," said Dr. Ames, just as they are com- pelled by the exigencies of modern life to depend upon others for their ideas of politics, science and art. Therefore, the preacher and religious teacher today must plan carefully the type of religion to be given the people. After leaving India, Dr. Schaub will meet his family in Paris and will then study in some European university, he said. He expects to return to his du- ties at Northwestern next September. Dr. Schaub has long been prominent in American philosophical circles both as a teacher and an editor. He is the John Evans professor of moral and in- tellectual philosophy at Northwestern and is editor of "The Monist."
