The program was opened with the singing of "America." The school orchestra played several pieces. Patriotic poems were read and talks were given. Must Interpret Religion by Art, Lecturer Asserts Religion today must be interpreted to the modern person by ritual and art, for the colorless and abstract re- ligion is unattractive, says Dr. Edward S. Ames, professor of theology at the University of Chicago, who spoke on "Religious Knowledge and Practice" at the Open Court Forum on the McKin- lock campus Northwestern university this week. "This colorful ritualizing of religion," says Dr. Ames, "is more difficult than many realize, but the principle upon which it can be done is clear. The modern religious leader must see the moral and spiritual values in daily life and must discern the social relations of normal human beings. Then he must enhance and beautify these rela- tionships with the weight and resources of public recognition and of celebra- tion." The majority of persons today must take their religion second-handed, said Dr. Ames, just as they are compelled by the exigencies of modern life to de- pend upon others for their ideas of pol- itics, science, and art. Therefore, the preacher and religious teacher today must plan carefully the type of re- ligion to be given the people.
