Pearl SHOW "DETECTIVES" Karl Dane and George K. Arthur Star in Community House Picture; "My Best Girl" on Friday Karl Dane and George K. Arthur -wiil be seen at the Community House next Tuesday, November 20, in "Detectives," a straight mystery story with all the thrills of the crook drama at its best. The comedy is introduced when Dane and Arthur, as a "hick" house detec- tive and a bellboy who aspires to be a second Sherlock Holmes, blunder in- nocently into one tense situation after another. They get into secret chambers where weird enemies assail them; Dane dodges knives hurled at his head and hides in a mummy case that once housed an ancient Egyptian king; Arthur impersonates a woman and gets the stolen jewels, and finally wins the girl after a series of hilarious adven- tures. Marceline Day is the girl in the case. Mary Pickford's recent production, "My Best Girl," will be shown at the Community House next Friday, No- vember 23, The theme of the picture is a pleasing variation of the ever-popular "Cinderella" type, with Miss Pickford in the role of a stock girl in the base- ment of the great "five and dime" es- tablishment, and the leading man, Charles Rogers, as the son of the millionaire owner. Kathleen Norris, the noted novelist, has introduced an un- usual degree of heart interest and appeal into the story. The realism of the mammoth 5-and-10 cent store and of the huge street scenes is no small factor in maintaining the atmospheric quality of the picture. Attend the Bargain Matinees Doors Open 1:30 P. M. Baclanova and Jack Holt in Teatro del Lago Film Saturday Jack Holt and Baclanova, the talented Russian actress, give a spirited and convincing performance in the new Zane Grey picture "Avalanche," which is to be shown at the Teatro del Lago this Saturday, November 17. Baclanova, in the strange Western set- ting, displays the versatility of the talent which brought her fame in the Emil Jannings picture, "The Street of Sin," and in the recent George Ban- croft masterpiece, "The Docks of New York." The theme of this Zane Grey story centers around the affection of two men for each other and the ro- mantic problem which threatens to estrange them. Billie Dove has what many will re- gard as the most dramatic role of her starring career in "The Night Watch," this Sunday's attraction at the Teatro del Lago. She plays the wife of a naval officer who is falsely implicated in a murder which can be cleared up only by her testimony--testimony that will cast a shadow upon her own honor. Miss Dove displays unusual dramatic qualities, and at the same time main- tains a fine restraint in her character- ization. Donald Reed and Paul Lukas, in the leading masculine roles, have parts of practically equal importance, and their contrasting personalities add greatly to the story's power. "Tempest" Is Great Picture "Tempest," the John Barrymore screen masterpiece that New York acclaimed during a long run at two dollar prices, will bring one of America's most dis- tinguished actors to the Teatro del Lago next Monday and Tuesday in a romance of Russia's revolution, Camilla Horn and Louis Wolheim ap- pearing in chief support of the star. The New York World thought "Tempest" the "finest, most genuine motion picture John Barrymore ever made," while the New York Times called Barrymore's picture "a master- piece... excellent entertainment." The highlights of "Tempest" are scenes of passionate fury between a princess of the blood and a peasant, between royalists and revolutionists, between generals and peddlers; and love scenes so convincing that the New York Telegram calls the picture "the answer to the modern movie maiden's prayer." "King of Kings" will be shown at the Teatro del Lago for three days next week--Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The picture is said to be one of the most stupendous ever produced. It is of the "Ben Hur" type, and had long and successful runs in New York and other cities before it was released at popular prices. Anita Fremault, a ten year old girl, has been signed to play opposite Dorothy Sebastian in "The Spirit of Youth," suggested by the Booth Tark- ington story, "Ramsey Milholland."
