November 24, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 57 Xmas Auto Buying to Grow in Volume This Dealer Says Indications are already being observ- ed by automobile dealers that the prac- | tice of giving motor cars for Christmas presents is likely this year to attain a larger volume than ever before, accord- ing to Gould C. Davis, Winnetka Hup- mobile dealer. automobile com- panies have been carrying intimations for a week or more that prospects are beginning to come into dealers' sales- rooms and make inquiries about Christ- mas delivery of the models they have been considering. "There are two angles of automobile buying for Christmas," said Mr. Davis, "Some people give a car as a present to the family; others give the car itself a present, "The two-car ownership practice is firmly established in this country as is evidenced by the fact that practically every home now being built is provided with a two-car garage. The practice undoubtedly exercises a strong influ- ence on Christmas automobile buying. Where the wife is to have her own auto it is becoming very common for the husband to make the gift at Christ- mas and he usually takes plenty of time to consider carefully a transaction of such importance. A month or more is none too long to make sure that one has all the facts about the model one is buying. Further, if the choice is to be a fast selling car like the Hupmobile Century it is only ordinary prudence to allow plenty of time for delivery and thus avoid the distinctly unpleasant possibility that the desired car might not be obtainable when Christmas morning arrives." Reports reaching Notable Increase of Dealers Scored by Graham-Paige The strong forward strides of Graham-Paige in production and sales in the last ten months has resulted in a notable increase in the company's dealer organization, according to Carl Hanson, of Hanson Motors, Winnetka, Graham-Paige dealer. "The company just reports that in ten months new distributors and dealers to the number of 1,040 have joined the retail sales forces, giving a total of 1,780," said Mr. Hanson, "with overseas dealers included the company has a dealer body of 2,093. "The list is growing steadily. In October alone 168 new dealers weré added and the distributor organiza- tion was enlarged by the addition of important representation at Atlanta, St. Louis and Columbus, O. At Detroit, plant expansion now under way will more than double manufacturing space to supply the en- larged selling organization in 1929 and following, the factory officials say." Double Acting Absorbers Called Best for the Car With the trend of the day not only toward hydraulic spring control but double acting control which cushions the impact as well as the recoil the Madison Garage and Supply company of Evanston, north shore agents of the Houdaille Hydraulic Double Acting Shock Absorbers, point out that this device prevents the springs from striking bottom, thereby killing much of the recoil before it even begins. The Madison company has just announced a special trade-in offer on all makes of shock absorbing devices as part pay- ment on a complete set of Houdailles. German Truck "Goliath" Is Built Over 3 Wheels A new German truck, the "Goliath," has just been introduced on the Dan- ish market, according to a report from Copenhagen to the Automotive Divi- sion of the United States Department of Commerce. It has three wheels and retails at prices ranging from 1495 to 1,650 crowns; its weight is only 350 kilos, so that tax and insurance rates are rather low, amounting to about 150 crowns. Its gasoline consumption, it is claimed, is 6 liters per 100 kilometers, its loading capacity 400 kilos. REO TO ADD NEW MODEL Reo is about to introduce a new au- tomobile. No details are available ex- cept that the car is to be somewhat lower in price than the Flying Cloud, and that it will supplement and not replace the Flying Cloud.
