Under the heading "Does Chicago Want More German Opera?" the ofhi- cial organ of the Chicago Civic Opera, "Opera Topics," carries the following editorial in its December number: "Do the people of Chicago want German opera? "This is a question which the Civic Opera is asking by including three of the best German works in its reper- toire this season. "In the past the productions in Gei- man at the Auditorium, while they have been artistic triumphs, have not had the same support by the opera- loving public that the Italian and French repertoire receive. " 'Lohengrin,' presented during the first week of the season, with Maria Olszewska as the Ortrud, was recog- nized by the critics as one of the finest productions ever seen on the Audito- rium stage. 'Die Walkuere," scheduled for December 8, to introduce Mme. Frida Leider to Chicago, is expected to be as fine an artistic success. 'Der Rosenkavalier," restudied and recast with two new artists added to those who presented it with such success before, will have an early performance. Emil Schipper, baritone, of the Vienna State Opera, will soon be added to the casts of these productions, Thus three of the finest artists in Germany and Austria have been added to the Civic Opera roster this year to in- crease the effectiveness of the German works. Mme. Leider is known as Ger- many's greatest dramatic soprano. The American public is familiar with Mme. Olszewska's success in opera and con- cert. Emil Schipper has achieved an international reputation in the German repertoire, "On the response of the public to these productions depends in a large measure the selection of other German works for next season. "The Wagnerian repertoire and the more modern German works make heavy demands on the artistic re- sources of an opera company. The standard of the German productions at the Civic Opera always has been of the highest this year the Company has endeavored to outdo presentations of former seasons, If this year's offerings receive the support from the public which their artistic merits warrant, in all probability other German singers of high repute will be brought to Chi- cago next year, and an extensive Ger- man season offered. If not, plans al- ready in hand doubtless will be dropped. "The decision rests with the opera lovers of Chicago." HOSTESS FOR BENEFIT Mrs, Fred C. Biggs was hostess to sixty-five guests at a benefit luncheon and bridge on Monday afternoon, De- cember 3, in her home at 446 Sunset road. The proceeds of the benefit will be given to the Goodwill Mission of Chicago to provide for a Christmas party for the 150 poor children under its care.
