Mr. Sterba, who, with Mrs. Sterba and their son Tony, is in Pasadena for the year, on leave of absence from the faculty of the Art institute, Chicago, has had an exhibit of his work in the Jules Kievets galleries at 464 Colorado street, Los Angeles. The California papers have enthusiastically reviewed the exhibit, and among other state- ments the critics have made the fol- lowing : "Two of the most compelling works shown are the portrait of his mother (reproduced here) and the artist's self- portrait. His quiet building up of solid forms in luminous color, always sub- ordinated to the essential aim of present- ing a portrait, is very marked in these two works, as is his mastery of brush- draughtmanship . . . . Mrs. Sterba, who is here with her husband, is subject for a full-length portrait. An extremely in- teresting portrait of a sensitive young girl, Doris Coble, was painted here, and makes fine use of a red dress overlaid with black and gold lace. Joy in Character Work "Your true portraitist loves character above all, and so one feels Sterba's joy in doing such a 'straight' piece of charac- ter work as the portrait of 'Arne Old- berg," Evanston musical composer. In the same category belongs the portrait of Frederick Victor Poole, one of the faculty at the Art Institute of Chicago and a well known painter." The Pasadena paper carries the fol- lowing items: "Taking the feature place in the cur- rent exhibition of art works which Jules Kievets is showing in his new galleries, is a series of typical portrait studies by Antonin Sterba, the distinguished por- trait painter. Noted throughout the east for his work, Mr. Sterba recently came to this vicinity and the first formal oppor- tunity for Pasadenas to view his work is given with this local exhibit. Evanston's Cultural Center "Mr. Sterba hails from Evanston, Ill, where his home was a cultural center, where many of the famous figures of art were wont to gather. He has been as- sociated with the faculty of the Art Institute of Chicago and his work has been exhibited in many of the most im- portant galleries of the east. "Directness and simplicity of expres- sion would seem to be the primary es- sentials of Sterba studies. A rare quality of humanism is brought to his work, which reflects an artist of fine sensibilities and exhibits a painter of unusual qualities of expression. Breadth marks his sympathies, his canvases re- veal; and there is a poetry of feeling in the simplicity which the painter employs to capture his effects. "Of particular quality in the group which Mr. Sterba shows here is the por- trait of his mother. Here is shown a deep regard for humanitarian moods in a characterization that is a work of sterling beauty and dignity. It is fraught with the richest feeling and loveliness and predicates a painter with ideals and sympathies of a high order . . . . A rare charm and simple beauty mark the paint- ing 'Charlotte Andrews' which is one of the outstanding works of the display. A self portrait is a significent contribu- tion. In this something of the interesting personality and character of the painter is revealed with singular ability. Dignity and the auiet forcefulness of the man are presented with definite insistence. The study vies with the best things in tha Sterba collection." In the exhibit Mr. Sterba is also showing portraits of Mrs. Hugh Del- mar, the late Wilbur D. Nesbit, the Rev. George Craig Stewart and Mrs. Sterba, all of Evanston. Mr. and Mrs. Mark Cresap, 535 Warwick road, Kenilworth returned to Chicago. Monday, after spending two months in Baltimore.
