"J December 15, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 71 NEW GYM IS MONUMENT TO LESLIE F. GATES (Continued from page 31) committee on student activities of the board spoke next. He also paid a glow- ing tribute to Mr. Gates and gave a great deal of the credit for the new structure to President Gathercoal, who, as chairman of the building and grounds committee, had saved much of the taxpayers' money by his patient attention to details. Mr. Phelps told of the seven aims of New Trier High school, intelligent vo- cational selection, responsibilities of citizenship, worthy use of leisure time, command of the fundamental processes of learning, worthy home membership, good health and ethical character. He emphasized good health as the most important and told how pleased he was to know that at least one high school in the country is doing everything possible to give its pupils good health. Hear Coach Aschenbach He then introduced Coach Aschen- bach, who in his customary unassum- ing manner gave all the credit for New Trier's undefeated football team to Mr. Caton and Mr. Persing, who coached the line and the ends, respec- tively. He also thanked Mr. Schu- maker and the band for the support they gave the team in playing at every game no matter what the weather. In order to show how many boys are being benefited by football at New Trier most of the 250, who plaved this fall paraded in the Girls' gym, which serves as a stage for the main gym- nasium, The Boys' and Girls' Leaders corps performed next. The girls gave a colorful dance that won storms of ap- plause, and the boys made a great hit with their expert tumbling acts. New Trier was represented in the heavyweight game by three members of the lightweight squad and two heavyweight second string players be- cause all of the first team had been out for football and had had only one day of practice. The first team played a little in the last quarter but didn't do as well as those who started the game. Englewood Forges Ahead The Gray-Green quintet, although greatly handicapped in size, did sur- prisingly well and kept even with the visitors for the first quarter. Engle- wood forged four points ahead in the second quarter and finished the game with a five point lead. Lockwood was the star of the game, making seven field goals and two free throws for Englewood. He started the game with a basket and twice made baskets from the tip-off at the begin- ning of the second half. Reed made the most points for the locals with four field goals and two free throws. The whole Gray-Gregn team played a bang-up game against its heavier opponents. The lightweight game was very much like the heavyweight encounter since the first string lights had to be saved for the big game and the second string Gray-Green ponies were outclassed by the South Side lights, who won easily, 28 to 20.
