J TTT HTT TTT HH, December 15, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 73 Book Notes NEW FRANCE The tale of New France--Parkman recorded it but much new material has come to light since Parkman's time. George M. Wrong, formerly Professor of History in the University of Toronto tells the whole story now in interesting detail in "The Rise and Fall of New France." He links the history of France itself with that of Canada. There are mteresting pictures of the Courts of Louis XIV and Louis XV and their relations to the planting of French culture in America. There is an im- portant chapter on French feudalism in Canada; another on the struggle of English and French for Hudson Bay and for the mastery of the prairie country; and still others dealing with the building of the French fortress of Louisburg, with Washington's efforts to check the French on the Ohio, and with the last and successful effort which England made, guided by the genius of Pitt, resulting in the conquest of New France. "THE DAY OF THE DEAD" "It is Hallowe'en with fun by Durer," writes Marian Storm of "The Day of the Dead," a major holiday in Mexico. Miss Storm, author of "The Gallant Came Later," is an authority on Mex- ico. ORIENTAL ART The first book to present in compact form a pictorial survey of Oriental Art in the three fields of ceramics, carpets and fabrics is just out. "Oriental Art" contains one hundred plates in color, with explanatory notes by R. Koechlin and G. Migeon, both of whom are art experts connected with the French National Museums. Their brief general account of the subject serves as an introduction to the book and will open new vistas to read- ers hitherto unacquainted with the treasures of Oriental Art. BEST SELLERS Three of the six best sellers among books in English in Buenos Aires this fall were Liveright publications. They were Emil Ludwig's Son of Man, My Life, by Isadora Duncan, and Ludwig's Napoleon. Zimmerman, 337) Sheridan road, plans to spend Christmas with Mrs. Zimmerman and the children who have gone to Phoenix, Ariz. for the winter, ---- Mary Pickford soon will start the production of "Coquette." FROM "THE CONNING TOWER" "Yes, Sir, That's My Beebe" "Sir:--In his latest book, 'West- Running Brook,' Robert Frost says: 'Let the night be too dark for me to see into the future. Let what will be be. Which Will Beebe does he mean, and why not let Will Beebe be?" Arthur Guiterman. He means the Will Beebe whose lat- est scientific expedition was to Haiti, and whose latest book--concerning the expedition, too--is "Beneath Tropic Seas."
