Gentlemen, the idea has clicked! It promises to be no novelty! It is there for your convenience. Treat it acc cordingly. Over and above all that, humorously speaking, it is a boon to the housewives. Consider the many [hours of patient waiting that has been spared the irritable wife await.. ing the return of hubby for the Sun- day dinner! As I said "they have left no stone unturned". Every angle was seriously considered. Even to the easing of the minds of the members' wives! Again I say, an excellent idea worthy of commendation! The idea was conceived by that stalwart pair of Cireolites, Messrs. Maroni and Garbarino. An excellent and much-needed suggestion for im- proving conditions about the club. If Walter Winchell will forgive this lowly scribe, I should very much like to borrow a couple of his favorite flowers in order that I might do jus- tice to the far-sightedness of these two members. As sponsors of the lunch room, they have left no stone unturned. Even menus are generous- ly distributed throughout the club rooms! Said menus boast of high, quality soups, tasty sandwiches and) many . appetizing delicacies such as' pig's feet, etc. Members are flocking by the score to curb their gastrono-' mical wants. Supervising the culina- ry quarters, is J. Battaglia. Andy, club steward, acts in the capacity of manager-waiter. The first venture of the house committee along this line proved fa.. irly successful. Undoubtedly, a few of the members anticipated a rip-ro- aring evening replete with hair rais.. ing deviltry. Sorry to say, they were doomed to dismay! It failed to re- gister with those chosen few simply because they believed that the play- ing of tresette and bridge was too refined for a club stag! Fancy that, dear brethren! Mind you, they are possibly justified in their beliefs. But the committee was correct also. After all, the affair was properly ad- vertised for the playing of these ga- mes. Prizes were to be awarded the winners accordingly. Wha't the pa- trons chose to do at the conclusion of the rounds was left to their better discretion! We will agree it was a tame stag. If we desire a real smart one, we'll have to prevail upon good old N. Perugini to stage one. How about it, Nick? Playing commenced fairly early, with a total of eight tables in pro- grass for the night. Seventy-five per cent of the cash receipts was disttri- buted in cash prizes. A very gener- ous first and, second prize in bridge was given John Grieco and Gid De- Spirt, respectively. Joey Battaglia. and Mr. Pellettier split honors in tresette both turning in tied scores. At your service, gentlemen! That is the nifty motto recently adopted by our newly established cafeteria on the second floor of the club pre- mises. For the first time in the his... tory of the Circolo Colombo, a full.. fledged lunch room has been opened for the convenience of its members and their invited friends. It is no mean accomplishment, either in as much as it has taken sixteen years ere the opportunity presented itself. We might express a vote of thanks to Dr. Scandiffio, Mr. Pellettier, Mr. G. B. Garbarino and John De Rose. If we had the same quality of sup- port from everyone that these gentle- men lend to every card function at the club, then everything would be hunky-dorry. As a personal reflec- tion, I thought the affair came off swell! I do not doubt that a future social of similar nature will draw a much larger crowd in view of the generous distribution of prizes. Mernher's Corner The second official Circolo Colom- bo meeting of the season was held last Sunday, November 18. High- lights of the meeting were as fol- lows: financial report of last year's executive, which, incidentally, disclo- sedqw loss whatsoever; discussion concerning re-decorating of main floor of club premises prior to the Central Tech Junior Rugby team, in which Henry Barone plays the position of half back, were tendered a party in their honor by their wor- thy coach, Mr. Stewart, at the Ba.. rone home last Friday. The honor guests were coaches Gore and McMullen. The rugby team turned out in full, accompanied by il BOLLE'PWNo 1'1'ALO-CANADESE RUGBY TEAM BANQUETTED Stag Refined and Otherwise Circolo Meeting Vostros Servicios Tell me! Why is it that the same faces always show up at the meet.. ings? Why should the attendance of these meetings be left to the ever- present rear-guard and front line? Is it at all possible to have the in- between ranks there 'at the same ti- me? Or are you biased by that say- ing, "You can fool some of the pe- ople, etc." Brothers, you are only fooling yourselves. You are well aware that questions are constantly arising that require the undivided attention and criticism, honest or otherwise, of each and every mem- ber of our institution! Why in he.. aven's name do you persist in keep- ing away? Why make yourselves ri- dieu1ously conspicuous by your reps ated absence! Undoubtedly, there are some who can offer legitimate ex- cuses. What of the other fellow? What is his alibi? Come on, boys, awaken from your deep slumber. Let it be said that you are an active member of one of To- ronto's leading Italian organizations' For that is what we are.- Gentlemen, it is your pledged duty to help us retain the lead! One cannot say that the member- ship committee is not wholeheartedly taken up with their assigned duties. Since the inception of the new ex- ecutive, four new members have been received into the hospitality of our club. That is very encouraging-es. pecially in these times of "Wolfie, stay way from my door". To quote secretary v. Piccininni at last Sun- day's meeting, "Gentlemen, you know that our campaign for new members is in full stride. Its success is not limited to the committee alone but to each and every member. I am ask- ing that all the members eo-operate with the committee. Bring your fri- ends. Show them what We have to offer. Remember there are scarcely few Italians who, at one time or an- other, have not been members of the Circolo Colombo." Quite true, indeed. Secretary Pic- cininni has spoken no truer words. May I, on behalf of the committee, solicit Your gturdiest co-operation in this matter? Joe Piccininni has volunteered to price much needed fixtures regard- ing our billiard paraphernalia. That is mighty welcome news to the sno- oker hounds... While Andy busies himself managing the lunch room and Lundy continues his modest gab- bing of new conquests, their dad will supervise the doings on the main floor. Respect his presence, boys.... New playing cards have been in gre- at demand of late. This has been a most irritable situation for some ti- me. Members will be pleased to know that a fresh stock has been ac- quired. That should quieten many voluminous complaints. . .. It is gra- tifying to know that no one is cap- able of deposing Maggie Altavista of his job as official score-keeper for the bowling league. He's back again, thereby making it unnecessary for each team to provide any particular person.... Have you noticed how often Don Romanelli has been aro- und the club rooms lately? Did you know he was responsible for one of our new members, Don Crea? Great work, Dons! Keep on coming'..... So long as Don Romanelli appears in the club confines, Nick Alti, lia is des- tined to challenge him for the undis.. puted championship of snooker-play- ing.... At the conclusion of last Sunday's meeting, Fat Battaglia le- arned a few things about the musiei.. an's federation regarding by-laws and amendments-to.. the-amendments Who was your informant, Fat?.... Think I'll call it quits. S'long. . .. A fair number of members were in attendance. Mind you, I said fair! Pardon me for spilling the gravy on your vests, brothers; it simply can- not be avoided. Do you mind if I ask a harmless question? No, I thought you wouldn't. But wait! I might sur- prise you, providing my words reach home. Circolo's annual New Year's Frolic; expression of opinion, requested by Italian consul, re Cireolo's stand on Casa d'Italia project. These major questions were seriously met by the attending body and lengthy discus- sions became imperative for their proper disposal. some of the. girls of the St. Agnes Social club. The evening was spent in dancing and games. Towards the end of the evening some of the boys could not resist the~temptation of playing rugby. Refreshments were served and a good time was enjoyed by all. To Mr. Stewart the rugby team extend their heartiest thanks for the enjoyable evening. . Membership Drive Random Shots _ Friuli Frolic Those who attended the dance giv- 'en in honor of the Friuli football ag- gregation two monthsebaelr, will be pleased to know that this ambitious group of Italian socialites are plan.. ning a bigger and better dance short- 1y before Christmas. Negotiations are under way for the rental of Cir- colo Colombo hall for the occasion. The football dance was very gener- ously attended and if the committee can rely on past performances, their prospective venture should meet with unlimited success. We extend this representative group of Italians our best wishes for an excellent turn-out. The Six Ems Such is the club name adopted by a group of charming and rather en- thusiastic scopa players in our com- munity. These ladies assemble at one another's home almost every Sunday, there to enjoy their favorite pastime. Members of this club are M. Motta, M. Glionna, M. Yanuziello, Mrs. Pellettier, M. Ponesse, and M. D'Ingillo. There you have the six ems. Most fortunate of these ladies is Mary Motta. It seems that at the last gathering she played hostess to the seven of diamonds for the en.. . tire evening. Not once did it leave the confines of her hospitable hands. Quite a lucky player, I say. Inciden- tally, these Sunday assemblies tend to put the girls through their final paces for their playing at the bi- monthly bridge and scopa socials. We might mention that this entire group of ladies are rabid supporters of the Cireolo's card parties. Sodality Social Much to my chagrin and utter amazement, I was duly informed that the scheduled Sodality social, which was to take place on last Wednesday at the Circolo Colombo, was post- poned in order to make way for some other organization that, somehow or other, had made previous arrange- ments with the club authorities for that certain evening. However, it will not dampen the affair one iota. As a matter; of fact, the girls will profit more by the postponement in as much as, they will have ample ti... me in which to talk up their affair. The girls were kind enough to re-in- form me that the affair will be held at the beginning of the new year Further announcement will be made in "il Bollettino". U. T. Fratellanza Meets The U. of T. Fratellanza assembled for their regular bi-monthly meeting last Sunday. Honoring the members by his presence was Rev. Fr. McCorkle, Superior of St. Michael's College. The Superior rendered a most eloquent discourse, the subject of his choice being Italy. Father McCorkle possesses those rare qual- ities which can only be found in top-) notch speakers. The members were grateful for the interest demon- strated by the Reverend in their or- ganization. They praised him gener- ously for so kindly condescending to address the assembly. Father Me, Corkle very graciously reciprocated with thank yous saying it was a ple- asure to talk to them because the major part of the members are re- sidents of the college and are under his immediate jurisdiction. As for future plans, the Fratellan- za is seriously considering the fe, asibility of holding a pre-Xmas sup- per and dance for its members and their immediate friends'. The enter- tainment committee is laboriously at work devising some plan which will ensure them of every success in their proposed venture. Our best wishes are extended this student organizati- on. Aye! Aye! Aye! Aye! And verily sol The truth can at last be unfolded. Not that it has been kept secret but now is the proper time. In other words, my head will be able to rest on its shoulders without fear of being knocked off. Allow me to inform you of Sal Cira's engagement to Miss I. Cremer. Open evidence of this state of affairs rests on the customary finger. The ring is elaborately mo- unted with sparkling diamonds. A smart piece of jewelry says I. Just when the lmot-tying will occur is not definitely known. However, we are all well aware of the eot1ple's popula- rity and can only predict great hap- piness for them in their married life. (4:1 ' - F3 5 tl h r? mo A s), T I RCOLO COLOMB Tic,' a-ii-tii- MB, w nak lit Social Highlights BOLLETTENQ By the way, Mrs. J. Scarlata (nee M. Cira) visited town last week-end with her husband, Jack. Her health condition has greatly improved and she says she was glad to be in To- ronto once again. Whereas, Mr. Scar- lata wished that you had been with him to see the Hamilton-Sas nia rugby classic. He thought the game very spectacular-especial.. ly the free-for_all melee which oc- curred at the conclusion of the game. Glad you came, folks! Odds and Ends Mrs. E. De Rose, winner of the last ladies' bridge prize at the Circo- lo, is still expressing her gratitude for the lovely prize she was awarded. That should help the future card socials immensely!. . .. "Fat" Batta- glia had better start reducing. He is sporting a corporation that openly suggests an aldermanic future. . .. Mrs. Hal Fattori is now doing very nicely, thanks. Of course you recall it was a baby girl. (I hope I'm cor- rect otherwise PII be sued for libel!). When will Doctor Scandiffio and George Sansone R. o. yield forth their literary achievement dedicated to men and their patience. Or is it women and their insanity?.... Bye the bye, it is high time Joe Cosenti- no, Osgoode Hall devotee, favored us with an article or two. Cannot the same be said of Nick Scandiffio, LL. B.? Surely the pen is mightier than the sword! What tis more, the Italian colony is anxious to know what our uirand coming professionists have to say on certain matters. As far as the editor is concerned, he would be tickled silly... We learn that Frank Abate is gradually recuperating his health losses. Like the snail, slow but sure... How do you like Bob Po- lito's hair cut a la John Gilbert? Too, too. romantic, no?.... Are J. Campone and K. Volpe really that way about-each other? If so let us know. If not why not?. . .. What is it that makes Don Romanelli and Nick Altilia such hardy companions? Is it because of their mutual like and dislikes of each other's ability to bowl and play snooker or am I try.. ing to be funny?. . . . Bridge and Scopa My aim is not to bore you with any elongated or elaborate "Pep" talk on this coming card social which is to be held in the Circolo Colombo hall on Monday, November 26. On the contrary my purpose is to please you by simply refreshing your minds on this matter. You are well acqua- inted with the past success of these affairs. We ask you to be part and parcel of their future triumphs. The committee expresses their sincere appreciation to their regular patrons and hopes that their more recent fol- lowers will continue to march in line with them. Remember the date! On- ce again, Monday, November 26th! Bring your friends .t There will be itables for all! Come early! High Three Games H. With the first lap of the current bowling season drawing to a close, there appears to be no indication of any team being a weak sister in the group. A team may knock off the reputed leaders with alacrity and then bow down in ignominious defe- at to a team which has enjoyed lit.. tle success. Each week there is seen a change in the standing which de.. notes how close the teams really are. Co stabile Tip-Tops who started out well and then faltered, regained some of their previous vigor to take four points from the Pellettiers. Each game was closely contested and the last game was won and lost by a meagre handi- cap. The winners bowled consistently in all the games with T. Maiolo hav.. ing a single game of 293. Hannah again rolled over 700 including a ga.. me of 309. On Tuesday the Dizzy Johns and Jockey Club split the four points evenly. But it remained for an alien to aid the latter team to gain their points. That annual rookie John Longo rolled 280 and 279 for his new team. J. Ponesse showed his men how to do it with a 254 game. Apparently like their name sake, Dizzy Dean, the Dizzy Johns are Dizzy in name only. On Wednesday night the Eaton team were trounced by three points to one by Angelo's Hotel. In my opi- nion it wasn't only the good bowling of the latter team that won but the fact that they scared the wits out of the other team by their vocal enco- uragement. G. Diminu- tive Mattacchione, whose name is longer than himself, finally breaks into the news column with 306. But he is such a quiet unassuming lad that we feel that he is deserving of some special tribute. Tassiello and Conti also turned in stellar games and even V. Bernardo rolled 210. Gismondi completes the personel of this team which has certainly made the league a pleasure to bowl in. 'For the Eaton team McMahon was 1the best with 240 and 288 for a three game total of 707. Nicholson and Battaglia rolled 645 and 625 respec- tively. Wildcats Bowling News The efforts of the Wildcats last Friday evening on the bowling alleys were beautiful to see. The image we had pictured in our minds of this happy group was totally dispelled. Youth and matron joined together in a riot of color and charm tow the evening one to remember. The new balls which the club has purchased have made an improve- ment to the alleys and a hit with the boys. Now all we need is a half a dozen towels and a sponge-toe-d cost seventy-five cents-to bring the alleys on a par with Karrys. In the first encounter the Buzzers managed to take one point from the Seven Sisters and lost the total pins by twenty-five. Ann Lobraico had the best total for the Buzzers with 275 and Lena Costabile had the high, est single game with 173. For the Sisters Rose, Josephine and Chriss'f all rolled over 300 and were the ma. instays of their team. There seems to be a slight misuzif derstanding as to schedule rules, etc. To avoid any trouble or confusion the four captains should get together and make arrangements. Each week we will print the schedule for the following week and ask all to be on time. It is with pleasure that we view such an. organization of this kind because it fosters a feeling of friend.. ship between the different Italian ladies' clubs throughout the city. The harmony which exists in this club should serve as an example to younger girls clubs to strive to " likewise. In the second game the Bridge Club still remained in the losing column without a point as the Our Pals went crazy and rolled two nice games. Rose' Cairo continued her pace of last season by rolling a 233 game and was closely followed by Mildred Bartello who had 229. There were no notable scores amongstg Bridge team but we noticed a gr deal of improvement all around. With a few lessons and a bit of prae- tise they will be a threat to one and, all.
