Thorne was the third child, and second son of William Henry Hamilton and Margaret Emma Trennum. He went by the nickname Ham, at least out west.

Thorne moved west after the 1901 Canada Census. He trained as a telegraph operator, and is documented as being at Parksville, British Columbia in 1909 and at Nanaimo in 1912. It’s most likely that he met his wife, Lois Gertrude Herman [1895–1972] in Nanaimo at this time.

While the family became dispersed, and some of his siblings were born after he went west, they were close and appear to have kept in touch. Thorne went back to Bobcaygeon several times.

Thorne died unexpectedly of Broncho Pneumonia at Prince George (the nearest large population centre to Endako) on a trip to see his doctor. His remains were returned to Bobcaygeon for burial.
