Description

The foundation stone for the first church was laid by Bishop Lynch on September 19, 1867, followed by a mass. Bishop Lynch conducted a solemn ceremony of blessing for the new St. John the Evangelist on May 28, 1868.

On Monday, December 10, 1901, the first St. John the Evangelist Church was destroyed by fire. After some debate, it was decided to rebuild the church on the old site, and constructions was begun in April of 1902.

By 1957, the congregation had grown to the point that a new, larger church was deemed necessary. The church we see today was completed in 1958 with the official opening and blessing conducted on June 7, 1958 by Cardinal McGuigan.
