Joe Nieuwendyk was recently named National Hockey League rookie of the year by readers of The Hockey News.
The Hockey News said the Whitby native was a “shoo-in” for the G.T.C. Transcontinental Group Ltd. award as top rookie after scoring 51 goals and adding 41 assists last season.
Nieuwendyk led all N.H.L. players with 31 power play goals.
In fan balloting, Nieuwendyk finished ahead of Chicago goalie Darren Pang for the rookie award.
A total of 12 awards were presented by The Hockey News. Nieuwendyk and other recipients were presented with a photo – engraved plaque and $500 for donation to the charity of each players’ choice.
