Whitby gymnast Lori Strong was eliminated from Olympic Games competition in last Wednesday’s (Sept. 21) floor exercises with a fractured right ankle.

She was hospitalized and the ankle was put in a cast.

Strong became injured during the floor exercises and her parents and the doctors attending in Seoul suspect that the injury resulted from a weakness in the ankle from an injury at a competition in China earlier this year.

As a result of the injury, she was unable to compete in the vault event and placed 36th out of 36 competitions. Bill and Gail Strong expected to see their daughter on Thursday last week (Sept. 22). However, because of the security at the hospital, they were unable to see her immediately following the accident. They were later in contact by telephone.

Strong’s grandparents and brothers in Whitby received the call from the Strongs early Thursday morning (Sept. 22). They said that although Strong is “downhearted” she will remain with the team for the duration of the Games.
