Obituary - Mrs. D. Payne, Richland, Ia.
From the Richland, Iowa, Clarion, we glean the following respecting the late Mrs. Dr. Payne, which will be read with interest by many who met the deceased during her visits to Sunderland Villa and other homes here: "The funeral of Mrs. R. H. Payne, who died on August 23rd, at one o'clock in the morning, was held from the M. E. Church on August 24th, in Richland, and was conducted by Rev. R. S. Moore. Mrs. Payne was the mother of eight children, two boys deceased in infancy. There remain to mourn the loss of a loving mother on earth, two girls and four boys: Anna E. Neugent, of Chicago, Mrs. M. L. Starr, Richland, Dr. J. D., Chicago, Dr. J. E. Harper, G. Logan, Washington and Fred, St. Joe, Mo. Mrs. Payne was taken ill ten weeks ago on returning home from a visit to Chicago, with a congested condition of the lungs which developed into an abscess of the large bronchial tube. During these weeks she was a patient sufferer. Several times the children have been called from a distance, near relatives and friends expected hourly for death to come, but she would rally and hope was entertained that she might recover for -
"Hope, like the glimmering taper's light,
Adorns and cheers the way,
And still, as darker grows the night,
Emits a brighter day."
The days and nights of watchfulness passed on until Wednesday, when death came quietly as the deceased had told those around her that she had no fears of the beyond. She had lived a Christian life and was ready to meet a Christian's life eternal. Mrs. Payne was a loving, attentive wife and mother, a kind and benevolent friend, greatly admired by those who knew her. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Richland. Many physicians and friends from a distance were present. The altar in the church was elaborately decorated with beautiful flowers. To show their love and esteem for her and their respect for the husband and family the business men closed their places of business during the funeral services.
