Oakville Memories: Old & New
Teen Town Orchestra (1946)

By Bob Hughes

Teen Town was created in Oakville in 1946 with the support of the Oakville Rotary Club and the guidance of Mr. Minshall, a teacher at OHS. Dances were held weekly in Victoria Hall in Victoria Park (later Wallace Park). To begin with, Doug Eddy supplied the music with a fine collection of records from a control booth that he constructed himself.

An election was held in the Hall for Mayor and Council preceded by a noisy motorcade down the main street. I was the first “Mayor” of Teen Town to be elected with Joan Guild as Secretary (I can’t recall the other councillors). Alf Robinson was the second Mayor elected.

I prevailed upon Canboro Browne to help us form an orchestra. “Can” had served overseas in the Queen’s Own Rifles Band so was just the man to put us through our paces at practice every Sunday afternoon. He’s shown above left with brother Garfield right in Berlin, Germany. Both had played in the Oakville Citizen Band before the War.
