Death of Crown Attorney Dewar.
Mr. John Dewar, Crown Attorney and Clerk of the Peace for the County of Halton, died at Milton last Wednesday. He had been in poor health for some time, but was only confined to his bed for one week and his death has caused a severe shock to the community. Deceased was a native of Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland, and was born August 22nd, 1829. His father and family came to Canada in the following year and settled on a farm in the Township of Esquesing. Mr. Dewar received a good common school education, having attended the school of the late Alex. Robertson, the father of Dr. Robertson, ex-M.P.P., the present Mayor of Milton, for six years, and after teaching school four months before he was 15 years of age attended the Grammar School at Palermo during the winter and studied classics and mathematics at the Quatre Bras School in Esquesing. He then taught a common school for upwards of three years, part of which time was spent as teacher in the old school near the Presbyterian Church in Acton in 1845-6, when he finished his education at the Ohio state college. Mr. Dewar studied law in Toronto, and began practice in Milton in November, 1858. He was a pronounced Liberal in politics, and was secretary-treasurer of the Halton Reform Association for some years previous to 1868, when he was appointed Clerk of the Peace and Crown Attorney, which position he held to the time of his death. He was chairman of the Public School Board and president of the Milton Mechanics' Institute. Deceased was highly respected by all classes in the community. He leaves a wife and six children. The funeral services on Friday afternoon were attended by a very large number of friends and fellow-citizens of the county. The remains were borne to the tomb by Judge Miller, Hon. Senator McKindsey, Sheriff Clements and Messrs. D. McGibbon, J. W. Elliott, B. A. and Henry Watson.
