A Good Man Called to His Reward.
Mr. P. E. W. Moyer, the editor of the Berlin Daily News, died at his residence, The Retreat, Berlin, last Thursday, after a long and trying illness. He was 60 years of age, and leaves a wife and nine children, most of whom are grown up. Mr. Moyer was a versatile writer, and his paper, the News, was well-known. He travelled extensively, having visited all parts of this continent. He graduated from Victoria University, and had the M.A., and B.A., degrees. Deceased was an alderman in West Ward for many years and up to his illness was a moving spirit in the council. His successful advocacy of electric cars, waterworks systems, sewers, etc. has placed Berlin, the town of which he was so proud, at the head of Canadian towns in fine municipal equipment, backed up by manufacturing industries and mercentile enterprises of permanent and profitable character. Mr. Moyer was a loyal and energetic member of two important bodies: The Methodist Church and the Canadian Press Association. To the interest of both he gave the strictest allegiance. He glories in their advancement, and never sought personal honor or preferment at their hands. The injunction, "In honor preferring one another" was his delight, and to this trait of character the editor of the FREE PRESS pays grateful personal tribute. In the Press Assocation Mr. Meyer was always interested in the younger members and delighted to aid in their advancement. At the annual meeting ten years ago, without any previous consultation, he nominated the writer as a candidate for the executive committee. In succeeding years he watched with a fatherly interest the advancement step by step until the presidential chair of this important association was tenderred by the members. Then his congratulations were most cordial. No doubt similar testimony can be presented by other members of the craft. The funeral of this good man was held on Sunday and was attended by many prominent citizens and others from a distance. The last sad rites were performed by three college class mates; Rev. Dr. Henderson, pastor of the church; Rev. Dr. Barns, of Hamilton, and Rev. J. E. Howell, M.A., of Acton, assisted by Revs. Dr. Jackson, Galt, J. A. MacLaughlan, M.A., Waterloo, and J. W. German, Berlin.
