Sudden Death of Alex. F. Smith.
A well-known citizen passed away very suddenly last Saturday morning in the person of Alexander F. Smith, who has lived in his home on Mill St., opposite the Commercial hotel, for many years. Mr. Smith had been suffering from a severe cold but was able to be about until Monday evening of last week, when he was seized with pneumonia. His constitution was in poor condition to combat with this insiduous disease and early on Saturday morning he died. Much sympathy is felt for Mrs. Smith in her sad and trying experience attending this bereavement. Her son and daughter left the week previous for Luther to visit their sister, and during Mr. Smith's illness she was entirely alone, except when kind-hearted neighbors occasionally ran in to help her. Mrs. Smith herself is now very ill with pneumonia .... Mr. Smith was born in Earlston, Berwickshire, Scotland, on May 21st, 1844. He came to Canada with his parents in 1863, and they settled on the 1st line, Esquesing, near Acton. His father was the late James Smith, who was well known here. On Dec. 27th, 1866, he married Ann McDonald, sister of Messrs. Graham and Allan McDonald of the fourth line. For a number of years he was engaged in farming in Erin, but nearly twenty years ago he retired from the farm and settled in Acton, representing several of the leading agricultural implement manufacturers. Mrs. Smith, two sons and three daughters survive him. He was a regular attendant of the Presbyterian Church and his pastor, Rev. H. A. Macpherson, conducted the funeral services on Tuesday afternoon. The remains were laid a rest in Fairview. Messrs. Alex. Waldie, Jno. Stalker, James Quantie, Graham McDonald, Chas. Davidson, and John Davidson acting as pall bearers.
