OBITUARY
JOSEPH FYFE, EX-REEVE
A telegram was received here on Thursday morning from Victoria B.C., by Mr. Peter McNabb, his former partner, stating that Mr. Joseph Fyfe had died suddenly on the street. A stroke of paralysis was the cause. Mr. Fyfe was the Canadian agent of a firm in England who are woollen exporters. He has been in the west fifteen or twenty years, first at Rossland, and in later years at Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria. Mr. Fyfe was a resident of Acton for many years. He came here as a Motherless lad of four or five years, back in the fifties, and was carefully reared by the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam Dickson. At the death of his foster father he succeeded to his interest, in the merchant tailoring business of Dickson & McNabb. Twenty-eight years ago Mr. Fyfe was elected Reeve of Acton and it is a matter of local interest that he was Reeve when Fairview Cemetery By-Law was carried, and his name as Chief Magistrate appears on the first deeds issued in 1887. A couple of years later Mr. Fyfe moved to Barrie where he had purchased a general merchantile business. He returned to Acton about twenty years ago and from here went west during the Rossland gold fever. It was Mr. Fyfe who built the brick residence on Church Street which was a couple of years ago purchased by Messrs. Beardmore & Co., as the nucleus of the large mansion now nearing completion. Mrs. Fyfe, who was Miss Jennie McMackon, daughter of the late Thomas McMackon, Acton, survives him, as do also Mrs. Robt. J. Gurney, of Victoria, B.C., Mrs. H. Binning, of Calgary, Mrs. (Rev.) R. Dick, Disciple minister, and Herbert, who in the west. Much sympathy will be felt here for the family in the sudden bereavement.
