The General store on the right had been a blacksmith's shop, although it may have been part of the agricultural implement factory. It had been empty when we moved there in 1958. The house to the right of it was occupied by the original owners who I believe were named Bachelor. They converted the building to the store around 1960.
The previous General Store was demolished in 1959. It would have been visible but the turn lane sits where it had been. I remember it being a light green clapboard building. The McGills, that last ran the store, lived just under the bottom of the frame, directly across #5 (Dundas St.) from the United Church.
By 1960, the Inn, was a private residence. Hidden in the trees to the west was a small stable. The driveway is between the stable and house. The second drive is access to the fields beside and behind the house.
In 1960, #25 stopped at #5. South of #5 it was known only as Bronte Road. Although we knew it was called Dundas St when originally built, I never heard anyone ever call it that.
When we moved there in 1958, there weren't any house numbers. They came a couple of years later but since our mail was picked up at the Post Office, no one used them. I don't know when the Post Office moved, but it was in the back room of a house half way between the Palermo School and the corner, on the east side of Bronte Road.
