Students fit to be (twist)-tied

EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Four Grade 9 students from Christ the King Catholic Secondary School will be tied up in a project this summer that they hope will eventually land them in the Guinness Book of World Records. Over the past few weeks, the students have been collecting twist-ties that you'd find with garbage bags or at supermarkets and their linked-together coil, wrapped up like a garden hose, measured some 1,300 feet this week. "We've still got a long way to go, but we're hoping for any donations because twist-ties are actually pretty hard to get your hands on," said Georgetown South resident Michael Fargiorgio. Continued from pg. 4 "We checked with (the Guinness Book of World Records) and if you want to put in a new record, it has to be measurable, breakable and comparable, and this is all of those. I think we've got a pretty decent chance." The four boys-- Fargiorgio, Matt Van Kessel, Philip Pawlega and Keith Van Kessel-- work in the supply store at CtK and noticed that the white ties used to close up bags were rarely actually used by fellow students. End to end, the ties were twisted together across the store room and now can encircle the entire main school building at least twice. The goal is to collect at least two kilometres worth of ties before they formally apply for a Guinness record. "We all started thinking, `Let's see how far this can go,'" said Keith Van Kessel. "It went across the store, down to our business class and then down the street. It just kept on going." The ties come in different lengths and colours and the boys have received many donated bundles, including the coveted six-inch red ones.
