Bronte Horticultural Society 25th Annual Flower Show, Hopedale Presbyterian Church Hall Details
The goal of the BHS was to “stimulate the beautification” of Oakville. With that thought in mind, their first event was a Gladiola show held in August, 1925, only four months after receiving their certification from the Minister of Agriculture. Glads were displayed in quart mason jars so that nothing would detract from the beauty of the flowers or give an unfair advantage to any of the participants.
Bronte Horticultural Society Flower Show Details
Activities evolved and categories included floral arrangements, single flowers, produce (in the autumn) and children’s and men’s divisions. In the winter months, houseplants were shown with the stipulation that they had been tended to by the entrant for at least three months.
Bronte Horticultural Society 1972 Trophy List Details
Points were given to the winners of each category. The overall winner was the one acquiring the most points. Trophies were awarded to the winners. There was an accredited judge for each event.
Cansfield Plaque, Bronte Horticultural Society Details
The Cansfield Shield was awarded to flower show participants who earned the most points for their project (1944 – 1972). Mr. Charles E. Cansfield was a prominent Toronto business man who retired to Bronte. During his short residence here, he took an interest in local affairs and was President of the Bronte Horticultural Society.
Bumby Trophy Jr. Award Details
The Bumby Trophy was awarded to junior gardeners. The trophy was donated by Alvin and Irene Bumby, a very active couple in the community. Irene held the position of president of the Society for several terms; Alvin served as assistant District Director, OHA.
Bronte Horticultural Society Monthly Flower Shows Schedule (1975) Details
Flower shows continued each month (plus a larger annual show) until the eighties. At that time, the BHS moved to the basement of the Walton United Church which did not have enough space to accommodate large events. As a result, flower shows became small and informal.
Bronte Horticultural Society Mother's Day Tribute (2002) Details
BHS continues to have floral exhibits several times each year – Easter arrangements, Mother’s and Father’s Day tributes and autumn displays.
Ontario Horticultural Association & Bronte Garden Club, 75 Years Together Details
Our talented members also volunteer to create festive arrangements made from natural materials to be used as centre pieces on each table for our Christmas Potluck and Annual General Meeting.
